Where to head towards........Site Designing

I read all the time about hitting the various tutorial sites for CSS, HTML, etc..........(W3Schools for example).

I've always done the table route on my sites.............yes I know.........ickkkkk. Always used Dreamweaver for site design. Now I wanna jump into the fire a go on with design techniques, etc. Other than hitting those tutorial sites and learning........where should I aim for in my webdesigns? CSS, XHTML, what?

THANKS A BUNCH

Learning good design practices is important, but when you get beneath the surface:

Learn XHTML, learn CSS - and hand-code everything (using Dreamweaver or anything else). Get your site working in Firefox and then hack for IE. It would also be advisable to test in Safari and Opera.
