how do macromedia build corners like that

see title also why do they have this inside there stylesheet and not in web page

It's for the FOUC - it's just easier to import them all in one linked stylesheet rather than seperately.

Haven't looked at the curves but there's a few tutorials out there on "corners in css". If that's what you mean.

is this good practise to have different stylesheets for differest elements

If you've got a big site, you could benefit from multiple stylesheets. If you don't want to work with loads of smaller ones then don't - use one/two bigger files. Each to their own basically.

corners - split image into several layers (each slightly shorter tan the next) and then float them. that's as much as i'm gonna tell you.

btw, i really like the new MM site design, regardless of wether or not they should be using flash - although i think they should as they make flash.

mac ie 5.2 has a bug where the background image is clipped at the viewable area. hacks are present here to set the background image to not display and lighten the footer colors until another solution can be found.

I found that in their notes in that css file...they must be using check-in check-out so they can collaborate
