Firefox has eaten into the IE market share significantly. With 75 million downloads (and growing) stats show Firefox averaging at about 10% of users and IE versions down to 80-85% overall. Firefox usage increases even more when you look at preferences when people browse the internet from home (as opposed to work where they are usually forced to use IE). Some folks on IT/tech related sites report IE users down to levels such as 65%. Even at this rate it will take more than 5 years to get close to IE market share. IE7 will be out soon which will stop Firefox growth accelerating and Microsoft can call on their unlimited war chest of funds to fight off any challenger so I can't see the dominance of IE being beaten inside 5 years. |

Fierfox gets a lot of support from developers, and I think especially from web designers. I don't think that IE7 will make them switch to IE, but hopefully it will make our jobs (somewhat) easier. I personally will carry on supporting FF after IE7 appears. Probably IE will never have a community to support it as it usually happens with openSource projects. However I think you're right though about the 5-year term, and that's because the common user is still ignorant about the advantages oaf a light, higly customizable and safer browser. On a side note, some of the guys who had it installed here at work, have been asked to un-install it and threatened to be penalized, because they were not using IE and that could've caused some security issues (imagine the irony). I get away, because I'm using FF for "testing puropses" |
