"steve you recently moved?" Not very recently - thirty-five years ago, in fact! Read all about it stehvelo index Don't read "Miscellaneous" if the idea of piercing your privates makes you squeamish. |

That doesn't offend me, as it's a common misconception, often used at the time as propaganda, but Finland wasn't part of the eastern bloc. But of course, being neutral and having a 2000 mile long border with the USSR meant that it was necessary for national survival to get along with the Russians. It wasn't possible for Westerners to simply turn up behind the Iron Curtain in order to settle - as a chat with any of your new neighbours over a beer will confirm. I think you were only trying to rile me, anyway. I now hold dual Finnish/British citizenship, so I am both isänmaallinen and patriotic! By the way - yes, of course that's the announcement on the metro. Since my first visit in '79, they've added "prosím", please. Which spoils the rhythm. Dveře se zavírají! I love Czech! There were three languages I never tired of hearing when I was still mainly English-speaking - Finnish for its amazing rhythm, Hungarian for its similarity to the sound of English without making any sense whatsoever and Czech because of its lovely variation between long and short vowels (the only Slavic language which has long vowels). I've since learned Finnish well enough for it to be my first language these days, Hungarian well enough to listen to and understand tales of yesteryear told by the elderly parents of friends and now it's only Czech which remains mysterious and fascinating to me. I know if I were to learn it well enough to speak it and understand it, I'd lose the ability to hear and appreciate its uniqueness. That's what happened when Finnish supplanted English as the language I use most. I no longer hear the rhythm or pay attention to its unique features because it simply MEANS. In the same way, an English person can never know what English sounds like to a foreigner. (A cross between Icelandic and Hungarian!) I hope Cocknose, you'll grab the chance to learn something of another language while you have the chance - you must already be able to read and understand quite a bit more than you realise, anyway. |
