how to - make fonts on a mac

Hi

can anyone shed some light on how to make fonts on a mac - well what I mean is I can design the fonts in photoshop/illustrator but where do I go from there? I have 104 gif's/jpeg (I did both just in case) but where do I turn these into a .ttf or font suitcase?

Thanks

you need software called Fontlab studio (4.5 or 5 are good) or fontographer. I would suggest you using fontlab and creating opentype fonts as these can work on both mac and pc. Postscript type 1 will only work on the system it was created on. although you can convert either a pc or mac flavoured postscript fonts into opentype there can sometimes be pre press problems.

x11 - http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/x11/ should be on the installation disc.

should be (mac OSX) application/Utilities/x11

then when x11 loads up application/font forge

Dumb question, as its one I should know the answer to ... but why is Truetype shit? It works on both mac and PC... which is half the battle usually lol Or is it just the extra options and features of opentype like ligatures and the like? I'm a deprived designer, my workplace is still using a mix of mac only fonts and a handful of opentype lol

i dislike Truetype because of two reasons; it has Hinting problems within the glyph's and also they can be problematic when goin through a postscript rip!! Although in new machinery the problems have been solved but if you find something from the 90's you can be screwed!

Apple had a good go at trans format fonts but as they did it independent from adobe they just seem to have missed a couple of things out.

Opentype all the way... can't go wrong

I use fontographer on Mac and PC - very easy to use, but hasn't been updated on the PC for a long time - so doesn't work on all latest spec machines
