Finally got around to watching Miami Vice. As a big fan of Michael Mann, I can say it lives up to his standard. Breathtaking cinematography (as always).

Whatever happened to the French New Wave?
Kids today never heard of it. Really sad.

The Last King of Scotland...FUCKING BRILLIANT & highly recommended. Run to see (well, rent) this one. Forest Whitaker's portrayal of Amin was beyond deserving of the Academy Award.

The book's better. I went to Uganda not long after he 'reign' was over... fascinating country.

Just watched sideways with Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church...relaxing and entertaining yet somewhat uncomfortable!

Just watched this, don't know if I fully understand it. I get that it was like the film "Crash", but the story didn't seem to come together.

I thought it was shit, In essence it was a dumb persons Crash. All the racial stereotypes were spelt out ridiculously too much, they made sure that even the lowest common denomenator would understand it, there were so many irrelevancies too such as the little Moroccan boy (or wherever) perving over his sister; yes we get that they are isolated and that the Western audience would feel superior to them but that was pointless as hell!

Babel 1/10
Crash 9/10

Just saw Transamerica, which was excellent. A great performance by Felicity Huffman. Also watched Far From Heaven, which is also good.

Yes, I get it. Stereotypes are everywhere. No shit.

It wasn't good, but it was certainly far from profound or truly insightful like so many people seem to think. Race really isn't a difficult subject as far as I'm concerned.

While watching Babel, however, I didn't feel like someone was trying to smack me in the face with the Morality Brick of Racial Injustice.

More than anything, Babel seems to illustrate the confusion and miscommunication between different cultures/linguistic traditions.

Drawn from the biblical legend, the people are spread across the earth and made to speak different languages, which is where we get the "communicative difficulty" literary device (and the theme of the movie!).

How was the Moroccan boy meant to make a Western audience feel superior? I can only understand that assessment as a kneejerk reaction. Its intent, if anything, was to demonstrate the common thread of human curiosity and mischief (basically, harmless childhood stuff - kids playing "doctor" and all that...plenty of Western children do that) that we all have regardless of culture.

It's all about miscommunication - between a husband and wife, between Westerners/Moroccans, between a deaf Japanese girl and everyone around her, between Mexicans and Americans - a topic not as easy as race.
