"More Tarantino than Tarantino" is his motto. @roto - Really? I thought it was fantastic throughout. I think the slow parts served as a contrast to the violence which wasn't exciting so much as disturbing. I think the film was - basically - about the inherent violence in human nature - and particularly America, which has spent its history reinventing itself after each bloody episode - Tom Stall = America. The America that is full of bloodlust (just watch Fox News), but won't admit it - that believes it's the most peace-loving country in the world. And the gore was fantastic. Weldo - I hope that's saracasm If not then I wholly disagree, Tom Cruise is so shit - and he's grooming that young fianceé of his for some strage wako like exodus to scientology. Freako. If you want to watch a good saumarai film find some by Kurosowa |

I've not seen "The Last Samurai" yet, so I'll withold judgement for the time being, but I have a feeling I'll hate it. Anyway, saw Crash yesterday as Roto suggested. Top notch. It's like Magnolia, but with racists! (and not quite as good, but still excellent) |

I've got no hangups, issues, preconceptions or thoughts about about Tom Cruise, Scientology or the world of Japanese cinema - and enjoyed it at face value. Simple. I generally don't like japanese/subtitled/martial arts films anyway - so it had nothing to live up to in the first place. Thanks for the recommendation - but I won't be seeking out the classic works of Japanese cinema just yet...... fuck signatures

I have an irrational disliking for Tom Cruise - I can't watch him - he's shite and that's it as far as I am concerned... Mission Impossible, cocktail, Minority Report, Last Samurai, Vanilla Sky, Eyeswide shut - can't watch em... hate the skwermy little fekker wish he had been killed in the war of the worlds - would have made a passable film more enjoyable. Kurosawa movies are much more approachable than you might think - They're aren't unfathoamble wierd jap epics, just good stories well told - yes most are in black and white + subtitled but they come off quite modern in style. The western The Magnificent Seven was based on Severn Samurai - his stories are very macho - makes for comedy, brutality, contrast + wicked swordplay. |

I guessed that already I'll give all kinds of films a go - but mostly if they're on telly (or whatever) at a time when i actually fancy a sit down and a watch. I enjoyed Battle Royale as a bit of a wierd Jap flick, and I like Hard Boiled (??) ... and I know the Mag 7 was based on 7 Samurai etc .. I should have enjoyed Crouching Tiger, but I got bored too easily when I last tried to watch it - and people flying/prancing about on bamboo rooftops just don't do it for me... fuck signatures

Ran is an interpretation of King Lear, Throne of Blood was his screenplay of Macbeth. Both are superb. Weldo - Crouching Monkey hidden crossaint was all a bit too etherial for me too. I like a bit more shove in a bit less love in martial arts films. House of Flying daggers and Hero were more enjoyable in that Genre I thought. |
