I'd recommend Nikos Kazantzakis' 'Zorba The Greek' , superb. I'm on a bit of a Greco/Balkan/Turkish vibe at the mo.

Pat, haven't seen the film, did read some crits and apparently it doesn't quite hold up, especially the rape scene. The book is written with in a expressive way. As said, it is really easy to read, 1 or 2 days if you get stuck in.

Amazon.co.uk: War and Peace

Seriously - I know it has a reputation for being the mother of all reading challenges, but there's a new translation out by Pevear and Volokhonsky which has been getting rave reviews and really is good (I'm reading it now). It takes a few hours to get into, but it'll last you for months.

Class book, mentally draining though, it's quite a difficult book to read, I might read it again soon.

While he's quite a new populist author, Chuck Palahniuk, author of Fight Club writes a good book, his style's not for all though, I know a few people who got annoyed at how he writes but not me, Choke and Survivor are good reads, don't take you long either.

I've got two:

Penguins stopped play
by Harry Thompson

Very very funny book about a cricket tour.

Harry Thompson was responsible for 'Have I Got News For You' and 'Never Mind The Buzzcocks'

Chickenhawk
by Robert Mason

Phenomenal book written by a helicopter pilot who served in Vietnam. Easy to get through in a few hours as well.

I've just ordered 'House of Leaves' a friend suggested it to me ages ago saying that i would love it, and i totally forgot! You reminded me, thanks!

Everyone should read Post Office: A Novel by Charles Bukowski, its a semi autobiographical book on the authors life, its dark, funny and a very easy read.

And if you want to read a book you can start and finish in the same afternoon go for 'Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah by Richard Bach' Its brilliant, he's the same guy who wrote Jonathan Livingston Seagull, which yes, is a childs book but its still ace!

Post Office is pretty good alright... very quick/amusing read.

Currently reading Pattern Recognition by William Gibson... seems ok so far.

This is probably the obvious post ever made by a graphic designer but 'the wasp factory' by Ian Banks is a must read, I'd give a miss to 'Walking on Glass' by the same guy though, it was a bit of a mind mash and i didn't like it at all. Not to say you won't! you might enjoy it!

Oh and EVERYONE should read 'The curious incident of a dog in the night-time'

Thats all! Hope some of you have already enjoyed these treats

I Love You, Beth Cooper

I Love You, Beth Cooper
by Larry Doyle

Quite possibly the most hilarious novel I ever read. If you were ever a teenager, and wasn't in the top 1% of the popularity crowd at your highschool, you'll love this. It's kind like the movie "Can't hardly wait", except soooooooo much better. I recommend this novel to anyone who tries to find comedic novels but fail. It's a highschool graduates one crazy night with his best friend and the most popular girl in school.

p.s.- the author is a former writer for "The Simpsons"
