From Quark to Indesign...

What are the advantages apart form the obvious cost difference? I know that the integration with illustrator and Photoshop is great - PDF writer is better and proof printing outputs EPS's perfectly. but what else? What are the drawbacks - is there any (apart from getting to know new software) - have you found that most printers are happy with indesign?

Seems all printers accept/prefer PDF's these days and it's where we are headed, but wanted some informed opinions off you lot.

Thanks.

Will I be limiting my employability if I become an indesign-er?

We've just moved over to InDesign and its just so much better than Quark - printings a doddle, the built in effects have reduced the amount of time we have to use illustrator and photoshop and I can really say its been the best investment we've made recently.

I don't think it'll cause a problem as so many people are moving over to it - the only people not so keen to move over (in my experience) are some repro houses who have problems with the rip outputting the built-in effects like text dropshadows over images etc. A few want to stick with Quark cos they know how to get around rip problems whereas InDesign would mean re-learning an InDesign for its outputting limitations and work-arounds.

PDFs are certainly more accepted at repro houses but some do still have problems with those effects etc.

On the whole I'd say stick with it - Quarks a dog in comparison!

Just my 2p!

Learn both Quark + InDesign. More strings to your bow and all that.

Hey pedge, will you be watching The Floyd on Saturday?

You betcha! Counting the seconds that make up my dull days until they're on; not so much "Wish you were here", more "wish I was there"!

The weather forecasts not so good for them though, so the first song will probably be 'Goodbye Blue Sky' . I think 'Us and Them' and 'Dogs of War' will be the most appropriate songs for this event...

Never really thought of it like that. I'm already fairy handy with Quark - certainly wouldn't hurt to learn Indesign as well

Wont do any harm - I've used Quark since it was Quark 2.12 and have only just changed over (got CS2 on a Photoshop upgrade). At first its a bit daunting but once you've rearranged the key strokes to the sort you've used for Quark it becomes a lot easier. The hi-res previews, printing sep previews, link updating etc are just so useful I've not missed Quark one bit. Seriously.

We output to a Canon CLC 3220 using Quark and it pushes the tick marks off centre so backing up a job is a nightmare as we have to off-centre the reverser page. With InDesign it backs up perfectly first time and processes quicker - that in itself is worth its weight in gold.

Or "shine on you crazy diamond" - parts 1-9, that should last about 30 minutes with Animals taking up the rest of the day
