Dreamweaver is the industry standard used by the majority of professional Web designers throughout the world. Being a Web designer isn't about the software you use though, it's about what you do with it. Take something like http://www.weblinksonline.co.uk/ as an example. Regardless of what software they are using I find it astonishing that they call themselves Web designers and then try to declare themselves the 'Guild of Master Web Designers'. Knowing HTML (or now XHTML) is vital but gone are the days (for me at least) of slaving over notepad, meticulously putting everything together by hand. CSS layout is looking at changing that in part as a lot of the Web designers on this forum will tell you. It's something I'm only recently looking into myself and *shock horror* I still use tables extensively in my designs... That is something that I'm working on changing thanks to the suggestions of DT users but it's hard after doing things one way for the last 8 years. If you use Frontpage *spit* on the other hand... I think I slipped off on a tangent in there somewhere... I really should be working anyway. |

weblinksonline.co.uk is amazing !! Flying horses and everything !!! I started with Dreamweaver but have been doing loads by hand lately as well, after developers I worked with didn't like the code Dreamweaver churned out.....it's certainly helped with my understanding of HTML and looks good on your CV if you can hand code I reckon. I still see (and apply for) jobs that ask for FrontPage even though I would prefer not to use it at all.... Word HTML !! What's that all about ??? fuck signatures

Gotta take what you can get sometimes innit m8... Still wouldn't use it though. Given that situation I would take the job then educate them in the errors of their ways. |

Programs like dreamweaver are just tools that help make your job a bit easier. Understanding why thing do things, and sometimes why they do things wrong is important as well. Its good to know and understand at least some of the code it produces. Otherwise I really dont think it matters if you use it or not. I am very amused when people who hand code, consider people who use programs like dreamweaver, not to be true designers. |

....that doesn`t make sense I use DW day in / day out. I still handcode everything, but just like the preview screen and the file tree layout on the right hand side. To be honest though the preview screen isn't really of much use any more with pure css layouts as it's all over the place. Is it any better in the latest version of DW? Maybe topstyle is the way forward... |

In all seriousness, my first interview for a web design job - oohh, about 6 or 7 years ago - was at elan recruitment in thier fancy fleet street offices ( of course i knew absolutely nothing at that point) - after the customary questions, they gave me a pad of paper and said, "write down the HTML for any layout of your choice, but it should include a header, a footer, navigation and a form element." I just kind of stared at them dumbfounded until I was quietly led away |

Humm, yes. Anyway, on topic, I use Dreamweaver MX 2004, but still find myself back in Notepad - just needs the human touch, eh? |

So another one who builds a house then tries rebuilding the foundations. And using note pad instead of a proper HTML editor. Last edited by webmaster_uk : 18-05-2005 at 16:50. Reason: Spelling |

Dear webmaster_uk What everyone means to say is that your site is shit - plain and simple. To call yourself a webdesigner is laughable, if not downright fraudulent. I have been playing with Photoshop and Dreamweaver for about 2-3 years now and Im hoping to start a Foundation Degree in October, but I don't call myself a webdesigner - even though my work pisses all over yours. Please take the time to check out this site further to see what constitutes design and maybe you will save yourself further embarrassment. L All of the above ramblings are opinion only! |
