With regards the ftp issue, we use flashfxp as it has the brilliant benefit of allowing us to have a single configuration file (stored on the server) for unlimited clients. We have literally hundreds of FTP sites and the practicalities of expecting each person to set up each one individually in dreamweaver is not an option. It also has the great benefit of one person being able to manage the accounts and everybody having instant access to them. Other benefits include the fact that it is a full featured FTP client compared to dreamweaver's half assed attempt.

If only dreamweaver had the same option for setting up sites - it's a huge pain having to set up the same thing 10-15 times (lots of different people work on the sites at different times).

I've found an alternative which blows dreamweaver out the water... Aptana

on the face of it the site implies the editor is for javascript but its a whole lot more, check it out!

Dreamweaver has a check-in system for exactly this purpose. They're entirely different models. You're trying to compare apples with oranges.

well, after almost a month of using aptana and eclipse at our offices we've now uninstalled dreamweaver from our machines - we have also started using subversion which is fully integrated into eclipse (if you get the subversive plugin) and this is going to make a huge difference to our work

the features of aptana really do outshine dreamweaver - there are a few areas that it could be improved such as a wyswiyg editor - its very useful for jumping about the code in dreamweaver. On the whole, no regrets on making the switch!

aptana sucks balls. tis a hardcore resource hog and makes the crappy work computer grind like a mo fo.

I'm trying to convert everyone here from aptana to ultraedit.

Yeah it does seem to use a good deal of RAM - 200MB+ when it's being used.

It's written in Java so it's always going to run like a pig.

IDEs aren't really my bag, I just use a syntax highlighting text editor.
