Placing a picture in Illustrator

Hello everyone,

I have this really noob question that has been bothering me. I place a picture in Illustrator CS3. Then shrink it and adjust to fit my design. At this point, from 300dpi originally, the picture has become 1600dpi and the size of the file is HUGE!

I looked and looked, but couldn't find how to fix the problem. Even after embeding the image, it remains 1600dpi.

Can someone help me out here?
Please?

you need to change the dimensional size in PS to your required size then place in Illy. Otherwise it is proportional scaling and resample itself and will stay the same ie. the smaller you make it the more pixels per inch it will be.

That's the way I do it now, but I though there was some other way than resampling in PS. They have to fix that in CS4, because it's really annoying.

I don't think it can be fixed!!!..... because you can only make things smaller as it can't go up if the pixels aren't there!!!
