Font Organization Software

Can someone suggest a good software for organizing and browsing a font collection? Excluding Bitstream Font Navigator (the one that comes with Corel Draw), and the Adobe Font Navigator (the one I think is not made anymore). I am using Font Explorer but it's kind of bulky so I was looking for an alternative.

I believe I read somewhere that Photoshop is limited to 1,000 fonts (or at least it starts to get bogged down around this mark). Do either of these programs offer the ability to "serve up" different fonts to different apps depending on your project? I'd love to be able to define sets of fonts to display in Photoshop as needed. If so, I may look into one of these...unless someone chimes in with some freeware that does the same things.

Nice n00b thread w00xer. You enhance Jack's lust.

Here's your freebie from Estonia Font Xplorer - ultimate font viewing and management software

I've been using it for the past 6 years and its right-button menu of font options is very useful and convenient.

you can create groups but they don't auto activate in either app afaik*; i add fonts to groups named after a project and then activate as required - maintype at least does it on the fly so at the "missing fonts" dialog i just browse and activate before cancelling the replacement.

linotype are offering Font Management - Simple, Smart, Free - Linotype FontExplorer X which apparently does auto activate on demand; the new non-beta pc version isn't out yet but it is available for mac.

* at least on pc

FontExplorer X is the business. Especially since it's free.

Unfortunately the Windows version seems to have been at the 'nearly ready' stage for ages now. I wouldn't hold your breath.

I use it on a pc. It's perfectly functional as it is. They may be aiming to add a couple of bells and whistles at a later date but there's no reason no to use it now.

Sorry, I thought we were discussing the Estonian freeware, and proc and hunch were referring to the Linotype thingy.

Carry on!

Nice n00b thread w00xer. You enhance Jack's lust.

There are "Temporary install font" functions just for that reason, so the Software (Photoshop, Illustrator even Microsoft Office) doesn't have to index them all on startup .

And I don't get the Jack's lust thing but hey, what do I know. I'm still a noob.

Thank you all for the replies. I'll have a look at them all

Extensis Suitcase all day long. Been using it for about 8 years now, maybe longer. The advantage? That you've even asked the question means you need it! Personally I've got over 6,000 fonts and without Suitcase the system speed is bogged down having to load those all everytime I boot, again when starting any application that uses fonts. Also a lot better for previewing fonts than anything built into PS etc.

Take if at face value...tongue in cheek...all that. It is what it is. And, you're obviously a n00b when it comes to this and/or this. Both will change your thinking for the better...
