E-Commerce software - Any recommendations?

I'm looking to purchase a Shopping Cart package that I can use to create E-Commerce sites for clients.

It needs to be secure, reliable, easy to use and update. I also need a package that allows fairly simple theme amendments.

Does anyone have any recommendations or advise?

Personally I use oscommerce.com. Its an open source shopping cart that is very stable and can be integrated into any site. But I would watch magentocommerce.com. Its another open source that looks to have many more functions than oscommerce, personally im lookin forward to this one.

i've been trying to tout magento for a while, but honestly its looking like its piling up into a giant mess. its system requirements are steep, and its the only php/mysql app that i've had massive issues with even trying to install on my local server. these issues have lingered for months now with no improvement.

if you're running wamp/xampp, you have to download a replacement pdo_mysql.dll file from some techno dance site just to get the thing to work, and even then you're presented with a billion pdo dump errors.

plus, the thing is slow as hell, has a completely ridiculous learning curve for theming compared to other cms's/e-commerce packages, and just tries to do way too much out of the box. the initial hype on the product was interesting but now meh.

I've heard good things about Shopify — A shop in minutes, a business for life. , but I've never used it myself. The downside is that it has a monthly fee. However, its supposed to be easily customizable and easy to use. And they have a free trial, so you can test it out.

Don't get XCart, no matter what you do. It's awful.

Here's another vote for OSCommerce from me. The code is a little bloated, (at least it was last time I looked which was a few years ago), but it's pretty easy to customize.

Understandable, I Personally have not used it yet since its still in beta testing I have not wanted to put it into any site, till they get the kinks out. But your right, that sounds like a lot of wasted time to get it running.

I love CubeCart, personally. The code is slim and easy to customize, and they have amazing forums support. Some versions are completely free. The checkout is quick, and already completely integrated with PayPal and Google Checkout.

I used Avactis shopping cart a little bit, and it's quite flexible and straightforward. You can download a free demo version from Avactis.com and see for yourself.

I don't think its that bad to be honest. The only reason i use it is because other platforms seem to use tables for layout..... if anyone has one that doesn't, let me know

I was reading on their website that they host the shop for you? Is there any way of downloading it?

Or would you just point your domain to the hosted shop?

I've used TradingEye before. Standards compliant code and good support.
