unexpected file format fla file in mx2004 pro

I have been given an fla file from a designer as I have taken over the site development. All swfs open fine. I have win xp and flash mx2004 pro. The fla files he's given me I can't open..and I need to edit one of them.
msg =
unpected file format.
I can't reach him today - but I think he created the files on PC and perhaps an earlier version of flash. I understand some folks have had trouble going from mac to pc .. but I think my prob is something else . .as I'm pretty sure the files were created on win xp.

I can create, save a new fla fine .. and it will open ok etc.

many thanks for any help.
