linux server choice
My company is just about to set up our own hosting server which we will be in total control of and wondering your thoughts on what linux to go for (server wise anyway)? i've been looking at CentOS, Debian, , Red Hat Linux, SUSE Linux, Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Fedora anyway the list goes on so looking for some advice on which would be the most managable, versatile, and all round fucking bees knees may be used as a blackberry server later ... maybe not though thoughts? |

When I had a VPS, it was Debian. No problems with it at all. When we decided to go for a Dedi, we still wanted debian. But then the hosting company that ran the servers, fucked off and ran with my money... If it works, it's valid.

I use ubuntu 7.06 on my VPS. Most of the tutorials I've seen for setting up ruby on rails (what I'm mostly interested in) on a production server use debian or ubuntu as the server so I've stuck with that. I'm not a linux admin but I've managed to get away with setting up a number of apache 2/mysql 5/rails servers with shorewall and ssh fairly easily and fairly securely with ubuntu 7.06. That's what I would stick with and would recommend. |

debian or ubuntu - i find you can squeeze more out of debian but it depends if you're going down the source or package route packages: debian > more stable, ubuntu > faster release updates meh.

looking into possibly running a windows server as we have good experience there. can anyone tell me what major pros or cons there are for running windows or linux server for hosting. I do understand that linux is far more stable, but can anyone point me in the right direction of resources? we mainly run php/mysql sites, possible moving into ruby stuff later |

Any of the Linux distros you mentioned would be a perfectly capable choice. There's not actually a massive amount of difference between them if you're running them as LAMP boxes. As for Windows vs. Linux there really isn't a choice to be made. If you were choosing desktop machines, there might be a debate. Since you're specifying a server, there simply isn't one. You can read all the resources you want. It won't change the fact that Linux is and always will be the better option. I'd question your sanity if you went for Windows (and I'm no Microsoft hater). |

They would be absolute nuts to go for a microsoft server, unless of course they wanted to run something specifically microsoft, such as .net (yes.. yes, i know about mono.. but still). Incidently, microsoft are open-sourcing .net framework. |
