The only words that come to mind are "Proprietary components" and "Amateur users flooding the web" (though I'll be the first to admit I'm still only a newbie in these design waters )

i thought it was a MS flash authoring tool when i first heard of it, but it's not flash at all.

liquidmotion revisited? it'll die just the same imo.

I think silverlight is WPF-E (Windows Presentation Framework Everywhere) based on the .net 3.0 WPF. so i'm thinking not a 'flash-killer' but a 'flex-competitor'. it sounds like it'll be for web-apps, not for animation. but we'll see.

They will do something stupid to limit how it is used, either by the authoring tools you need to use to make it, or by the hosting environment. As it seems to be linked to .NET some how, looks like you might need windows hosting to make the most of it.

Sigh, they will ever learn?

Its a flex/apollo competitor by the looks of it... Some OS Presentation layer stuff like apollo, some xml data with flash and all that stuff like flex... from what little i've seen it doesnt look terrible... Although I can see it coming... Proprietary software (Expression studio) needed to author it... Closed source, same community as MS server technology people... Ugh. SHame. I almost liked it.

I'm sorry but Silverlight KICKS FLASH'S ASS. This tool is unbelievably powerful. Most of the comments I've seen in this thread have been incredibly vague.

1. If you ignore this tool, it's your loss
2. Proprietary components? What!? It is server agnostic (you can deploy it 100% from a Linux machine). Additionally, it adheres to the standard web architecture, unlike Flash.
3. Silverlight was formerly "WPF/E", however, it is not part of the .NET 3.0 framework.
4. Limiting authoring tools? Nope. All of the authoring tools generate either open text or xml. Pretty damn open if you ask me.
5. Flash blows

flash blows? haha. yah who the heck would ever implement flash on their sites? i heard they have a user base of only 9% who have the plugin.

sarcasm aside, i just heard that netflix is using silverlight for a new online service where you can pay $5/mo for 5 hours of watching videos via silverlight, they chose silverlight because it supports HD.

ok back to bashing microsoft...

It doesn't work in Firefox on Kubuntu, therefore it is being ignored.

Where do you get your information?

It works in IE, FireFox and Safari. Linux support is being provided via Novell by the end of the year.

I would address your other items, however, it's clear you do zero research before speaking. Paying attention to detail is important when developing products. I hope I don't have to run any of your Flash/Flex apps.
