old ground maybe? : quark v indesign
Having a chat with a fellow designer and he was querying which one to get. I opted for indesign as i like the adobe interface, the feature set and more importantly my printer accepts indesign files. He was swayed to quark because its the "industry standard". Any views folks? |

ID. Any/all printers worth their salt should be able to accept and work with ID native files and PDF by now. I'm a card carrying Adobe devotee and ID's functional similarity to Illustrator flattened out the learning curve. My frustration at having to maintain a second OS (Classic) for the sake of a single app from an unappreciative company (Quark) lead me to first tryout ID. The comments about other switchers had also picqued my interest in the app, but I dragged my heels for the same 'industry standard' reasons. Finally gave it a spin one day and I was sold in no time - and I've never looked back. Again, if your printer can't handle ID files, then do yourself a favour - get ID and find yourself a new (read: better) printer. |

I switched over to InDesign and found it a breeze to use, as a result i'd hadnt touched Quark for quite a while until a job i was doing before christmas which involved a bit of Quark 6. Cant say I miss using it to be honest. If i was buying now InDesign would be my choice, especially considering the price of Quark. |

Given that ID does such a good job of opening Quark files intact, it's hard to think of any credible reason to stick with Quark beyond habit/laziness and the usual industry standard/fear rhetoric. |

damnit just posted something then lost it! nevermind... at work we're all using Quark 4 on a mac to put out all our newpapers and magazines (and that's quite a lot). i remember when i first used v4 it seemed really low-tech and backward - it doesn't even have layers ffs! however, it does do most of the things we need it to, including bringing stuff in from our databases. i've been thinking of telling the boss to consider upgrading to version 6, but i just can't see most of the people here using any of the new features 6 provides (except perhaps for layers). everything was great til i got here

i know quite a few magazine designers and probably 90% of em still use old versions of Quark - switching to osx and quark 6 is pretty expensive job if you have 10 or so layout/design people (especially as most would probably need new machines) and theres also the downtime involved, the training of IT support staff etc etc... oh my, i need to sit down |
