Top 5 of all time

my brother and i were discussing the imminent launch of Vice City on the PC and wondering exactly how good it would be. the conversation soon changed to our Top 5 computer/video games of all time.

mine were:

Baldur's Gate Series
Quake
GTA 3
Starcraft
Metal Gear Solid

(Streetfighter 2 narrowly missed out..)

my brother's were:

Baldur's Gate Series
Planescape Torment
Quake
GTA 3
Mafia.

UT

Deus Ex

Metal Gear 2

Vice City

(original Wipeout, original Tomb Raider, Quake, Unreal, Marathon, Outrun - not sure which of these would end my list, but itd have to be a classic)

I never really liked Q3, it was too cartoony looking.

In no particular order and mainly for the amount of time I ended up on these things...

Turican
Elf
Newzeland Story
Golden Eye
Horace Goes Sking

I loved my Amiga and that ZX Spectrum 48k

So many games, so many lost hours..

I wouldn't be able to decide on a final 5, but I think these 3 would be in there:
- Vice City (ps2)
- Goldeneye (n64)
- Half-Life (pc)

ohhh, goldeneye achh.

I bought an N64 thinking Goldeneye was good, but it really wasnt up to par with similar FPS like quake that were around at the same time. The levels were very boring and simple. Incredebly small in multi player and also appeared to have only 4 or so multi player levels with different textures. The snow levels were good, but didnt really make up for a ver unsatisfying game.

I got so fedup with the lack of quality N64 games that I even emailed nintendo and offered to send them my n64 back if they paid the postage. Unsurprisingly they just said they were sorry I wasnt happy (or similar) and that was it.

Im a bit more careful before I buy a games machine now. I only have a PS2 and would only ever consider an Xbox for Halo, but as MS bought bungie and forced the game out quicker. Loosing the Mac/PC game (Bungie also developed Marathon remnants of which appear in Halo) and the event that Halo was going to be, and turning it into an average FPS. Hopefully Halo 2 will be similar to what Halo 1 was promising and both Halo and Halo 2 ill appear on the Mac/PC shortly.

blimey, i didnt expect to write that much, sorry.

the new Indiana Jones game is kinda disappointing... they've made him auto aim on enemies and the controls in general are poor too... Pumped up his muscles too much... but apart from that the graphics are ok... maybe too colourful though = meaning less atmospheric! On the other hand I only played a demo... but shouldn't that be enough...?

I don't want to rank them but here are some favourites:

Need For Speed (3 & upwards)
Grim Fandango
Jedi Knight 2
Mafia

my mates who had n64's would always go on about how good goldeneye was in deathmatch. when i finally played it i was really disappointed - it was slow and didn't compare to the PC FPS games - even the older ones like doom.

you just can't play fps without a mouse, it can't be done

i generally think nintendo's were created for a younger audience than ps2s and xbox's. if you look at their titles, many of them are based around cute cuddley characters and involve jumping platforms, racing cars and playing football.

/adds 2p.

thats why i never mentioned the gamecube in my previous post - theres been NOTHING out for the gamecube id consider buying - I cant be doing with monkeyball etc.

I think its pretty impressive that sony can still sell PSones. Considering Segas been through the saturn AND dreamcast since then and finally given up, and Nintendo have been through the N64 and Gamecube. I could still see the PSone around in some form for a few years since. The PS/PSone has been going for 8 years, and the SNES (one of the most successful and biggest selling consoles) only lasted 5-6 or so years.

yeah that too, i bought that last 007 PS2 game - nightfire - for my sister and had a go, apart from the fine graphics its damn hard to control, i kept sidestepping off stuff or into gunfire.

EDIT - Half-life on the PS2 supported USB keyboards and I used my mac mouse and keyboard to play it, but most of the recent ones dont seem to for some reason.

no way!!

How can people not be impressed by Goldeneye??! One of the best multiplayer's of all time.

Now I know everyone's far too "hard core" for Nintendo and only respect a game if its gritty and vioent but you've got to appreciate the gameplay of titles like Mario Kart 64! And the genius that is Mario 64 - setting the new standard in 3D platform that has still only been matched by Nintendo

And as for the Gamecube has anyone who's commented got one? Has anyone played Metroid Prime? - one of the best FPS ever, and there are hundreds of superb games for the machine - plenty to satisfy so ultra-mature-violence-rebel-cool gamers out there as most PS2 and XBOX titles are released on GC as well

well, as i have a PS2, why would i want to buy a GC as the same games are released apart from the odd one-off?

fair enough - i just get sick of people writing off nintendo because its not all marketed the same as Playstation (and it's a monday so i'm aloud to be ratty).

I've got to say that Sony have really shown how it's done in terms of marketing, but that doesn't mean Nintendo is not as good/only for kids.
Things have improved a lot for Nintendo fans with the Gamecube because, like you say, you can now get most releases on all platforms.

Man those Spectrum 48's ruled, my first program copied religiously from the book, hello in colour all round

I always remeber my Brother spilt a whole bowl of wheatabix over the thing, 15 mins on top of the boiler and it was right as rain. Unlike my Mac which'll explode at the mere mention of a glass of water... don't ask

I came from the PC FPS scene to the xbox and Ghost Reacon Live is fantastic and has a huge community now LIVE is the wasps nipples. After a bit of pratice I find it just as easy to play FPS with a pad as I do with a mouse. And thats pretty good.

I used to be ranked 75 in the world on WON in the Half Life / TFC golden age.

1. The Monkey Island games
2. chucky egg on the spectrum and BBC Master System.
3. Sonic the Hedge Hog
4. Doom
5. To many to mention..................

And what about 'Elite', the only reason to have (or know someone with) a BBC Micro?

Does that bring back memories

I can only vaguely remember chucky egg.

Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy were the one's that stick in my head after all these years, then there was that football management game from that John wark look-a-like (lots of hair and a big beard).
