About Painter and others
I've been using basically using Adobe stuff for most of my design needs and wants. However, I've been considering checking out some other programs, i.e. Painter which is the current front runner. I'd like to hear some opinions regarding this and some others that people like to use other than Adobe stuff. |

I like Painter. Don't use it much but I like it. The interface on the Classic version and up to 5.5 (if I remember correctly) is a bit... different. The tools look a bit childish... very (erm) visual interface. But the results you can get are really nice and realistic. You might know that the Painter got bought up by Corel... The new version 6 (I think it is) supports layers which is what I really miss in my Classic edition - don't have version 6 so I can't tell you much about it. If you want to invest in a tablet (Wacom) you'll get the Classic version bundlet with it! An extra bonus... Also check out Deneba Canvas. Very versatile application for both vector and bitmap graphics! Some things are quirky but that's apparently fixed with the latest update available online. Don't have it though - too big for 56K... Despite the quirks, the application is a dream... I sound like a converted, so I'll stop now. (This topic has been touched in the post called 'what should bush do with his hands?' under 'Help Me!'. Read the latest 3-4 posts.) ...

really depends what you wanna do - for 'natural media' Painter is probably the best. But as an alternative all-round application - Canvas is [i:b04f40d44d]very[/i:b04f40d44d] competent! ...

(I knew there was something else) of alternative graphic apps there's also: [b:7d49fd5eea]Satori Photo XL [/color:7d49fd5eea][/b:7d49fd5eea]- (japanese word - stands for something I don't remember) Powerfull. (and now thinking about it; I think I'll install it again) How should I say it... the program takes the p*** out of screen resolution for your advantage... Basically it's 'resolution independent' - that's what they call it - but check out the link to know exactly what I mean [b:7d49fd5eea]Expression 3 [/color:7d49fd5eea][/b:7d49fd5eea]- imagine working with natural media - but it's all [i:7d49fd5eea]vector[/i:7d49fd5eea]!!! Brilliant program! Easy to learn too. Tried one of the older versions and loved it. Wish I had it... ...

painter, etc.
Painter 8 is really nice. It brings the interface even closer to Photoshop's and fixes some nice things like bringing the Painter 6 watercolor brushes back as a seperate set. Canvas is a nice little 'do-it-all' app, but has virtually no usage in the professional industry. It's near impossible finding a printer that takes canvas files natively. So in the end you'd still be converting to a bitmap file format which kind of defeats the point. Another nice little program you guys might wanna check out is Expression (http://www.creaturehouse.com/expression3.htm). It's basically a cross between Painter and Illustrator. |

Expression is indeed very nice! and the price is nice too! ~100 british pounds or is it dollars...? Canvas is a slightly obscure application - but let me point out that there is no problem with exporting to the 'standard' file formats. ...it seems to be the case with other alternatives! (I never said Corel ...
