inkscape

looks interesting, not had time to use it yet though. Only at 0.4 build, but apparently stable

Inkscape is an open source drawing tool with capabilities similar to Illustrator, Freehand, and CorelDraw that uses the W3C standard scalable vector graphics format (SVG). Some supported SVG features include basic shapes, paths, text, markers, clones, alpha blending, transforms, gradients, and grouping. In addition, Inkscape supports Creative Commons meta-data, node-editing, layers, complex path operations, text-on-path, and SVG XML editing. It also imports several formats like EPS, Postscript, JPEG, PNG, BMP, and TIFF and exports PNG as well as multiple vector-based formats.

I think it's definitely worth a look. A couple more improvements to the Gimp, and this tool, and I'm off to set my own design business

ok, just downloaded it and had a little fun. It is really a nice tool. I wouldn't go as far as calling it a substitute for illustrator, but it's ok.

Some of the cool features are that floating pannels auto-hide when you're working on the canvas, so working space maximized, rounded corners on recangles can be modified via an input box independently on the x and y axis, nice font manager included (you can preview the whole text selected), transparent gradients, and probably a couple more that I can't remember right now.

I hate the layers interface (it's just a dropdown menu at the bottom)

I think it's worth trying. And it's very small, too 8.5 MB download
