Newbie needs YOUR opinion!

Hey guys,

I'm new to this board and I'd like some opinions on a few sites I have put together. I am 18 years old and web design has been a hobby for a year or two.

http://www.allthatU2leftbehind.com - a U2 fansite that has proved very popular.

http://www.tempoonline.co.uk - a site I made for a school Mini-Company.

http://www.seanmedia.co.uk - an unfinished site that will promote me as a designer.

http://www.a1datatech.co.uk - an unfinished site for a local business.

I have others in the pipeline as well. Maybe I should have called my portfolio site www.Unfinished-but-nearly-ready.co.uk !!

I kinda have a less-is-more approach. Tell me what you think.

Cheers guys,
Seán

Not bad. Things to bear in mind though:

Don't design to specific screen resolutions. Try to learn about more fluid page design.

Using tables for your layout isn't recommended. Have a go at learning to use css fully. If you're interested, you'll find loads of links to help with this - try here first: http://www.mako4css.com/Basics.htm

Just one small point, the 'latest news' box on the U2 site needs some cell padding cos the text is too close to the edges.

I'll look at the others later.

fad? hmm, more of a good idea if you ask me.

I guess it depends on what aspects of web design you feel are most important. Useability, Accessability, Functionality, Updateability or just plain looks. There are great advantages to centralising code and seperating style from content... CSS styling takes this further than tables which can only be a good thing (Tables can still be handy on the fly though )

It's a fad bacause it is what all the politicos within webdesign are propagating at the moment. Just as back in '99 when 'everything will be in Flash i ntwo years' was all vogue.

All those aspects you mention are obviously important but it really epends where they are applied to. Certainly CSS gives more control of type, background and small elements of design. However it still has serious cross platform issue.

It is also quite interesting to see how certain people seem to feel everything needs to be 'standartised' while the actual characted of the industry really prevents that. Accessing the web is and remains a personal experience and that's where focus IMHO needs to be.

Well, you wouldn't be hearing me say that considering I make a living out of it. In the end personal interaction makes it what it is. And I think the peast has taught us that that is very difficult to control. If at all.

Not bad considering experience SeanMedia. Youre better than I was at your age. Dont let any critisisms discourage you; the worst critics I had ended up forcing me to improve.

general comments:
you should (really) try to take into account a site's appearance on larger screens/screen resolutions.
and for text: try to use text - not images. 2 very good reasons:
1 - easy to edit and make adjustments
2 - it's smaller in filesize than a gif or jpg!
also try to test the sites on older and 'dodgy' browsers: Netscape, Opera etc...

Opera is not an "older or dodgy browser"! It is more betterest than IE!
