CD case design
My name is Daniel. This is my story... This is my first proper post here and frankly I'm... terrified... which is a healthy indication of the respect I have for the work I've seen posted here. Oh yes. I work as a one-man new media department for a small post-production company, based in beautifully converted 18th century farm buildings just outside NW London. It's a lovely, peaceful work environment, and we're respected in the industry, but one of our main problems is persuading clients to travel out to us. It's a lot easier just to get the tube to Soho, and there are nicer women there. The style of our publicity material tends to use the rustic angle a lot, which makes us seem about as cutting-edge as a 300 year old scythe... and I'm mostly to blame cuz I love using photos of the olde worlde shite around this place. So generally I'm trying to come up with ideas for a whole new identity for the company. This afternoon. ...but this morning, I'm just trying to design a new cd-case. I've got 2 rough directions here: The first one goes with the idea that it's good for your health to work here - there's fresh air and lots of space and all that [yawn]: http://www.lynxfarmyard.net/images/c...se_frisbee.jpg The second idea I'm embarassed about now I've realised how cliched it is, but I was thinking it's kind of feng-shui-ey here, and I thought of japanese craftsmen and anyway.... http://www.lynxfarmyard.net/images/c...ase_honour.jpg I'd appreciate any reactions to the direction, as much as about the actual design. cheers! dAN |

Nah, busy busy busy. They look quite nice, like they could be the start of a set. Maybe do 5 or 6 based on a quote/use for a CD. Okay it may have been done before, but clients like a bit of humour and receiving some variety in what they get through the post. And even if they don't, if your sending them Cd's I'm assunming they're already hooked. |

I personally dont like the CD case. I think it makes the design look bad. I also like abit of colour. I guess to have a printed actual case in my hand I would react differently but seeing it screenbased really doesnt do it for me. |

i actually really like the designs you've come up with. im a big fan of simplicity, then again, who isn't. i like the first one alot better than the second. Although, the implied connotation isn't exactly obvious. If I saw that cd case, I'd just think it was some dude playing frisbee... Perhaps a more obvious marketing approach with a gimmick that is a bit catchier, and clearly identifiable? Love the clam style cases. Those will most definitely stand out on a potential client's cd shelf or desk. |

Heh heh, well yeah... oh shit it's the afternoon already! I think the "outdoorsy" theme will become more apparant when I've got a set of 4 cases. I don't want to make it too obvious, just give clients a feel that working with us is somehow... healthier?! dAN |

eh? caricature styles maybe japanese design ethics - never. you lot think sticking a japanese "type" font in a design is the basis of japanese style. +++++++++++++++++ just pick four backround colours and some nice type. one colour one service maybe ie blue - interactive. and build up a set send your clients one disc a month and soon they will have a great coloured collection. you could then style your website, stationery and brand to reflect this rather simple idea. Forget half arsed vector illustrations. |

The "japanesey" idea was more of an idea for an angle that could be summarised as "to reflect the values of japanese craftsmanship" - rather than create a japanese inspired design. But yeah I must admit I took the line "honour your materials" and cheapened it into a lame visual gag... |

I like the first but the second one doesn't relaly make sense. Can't tell whats going on and the figure illustration is not as strong. (i.e can't see his arms...looks kind of small, I don't get it visually etc) First is more dynamic, and I like the idea, but there's a few ways you could treat the outline of the figure...doesn't need to be just black filled in. There's something about faceless figures traced in illustrator which I'm not that keen on.. *quite like that 'honour your material font tho` I also like JapanMik's idea of having a different BG colour for each CD. |
