Site Layout Critique Needed

We have a graphic designer on staff that is new to the Web 2.0 concept. She ran into a serious design block trying to get this site together. Now that it is not finished or tuned up enough, the client wants to see the progress as we are running behind. So I have reluctantly posted it for them to look over and tried to contact them by phone to explain it is rough. They ended up not answering by phone but instead sent us an email response complaining about the look being like a kid threw it together overnight. Needless to say that hasn't helped the designer's self esteem.

We would like to get some brutally honest critique from the community before talking with the client over the phone to just see what kind of input can be provided. So please give us a moment of your time and tell us your honest first impression and thoughts!

Thanks in advance for everyones honesty and opinions!

They were right, it does look like a kid threw it together.

The banner is about 400px tall! Thats a big ass banner.

PS - Sorry to hurt your graphic designers feelings, but she's rubbish. Hire a new one. (Don't listen to any garbage about 'being new' to the Web 2.0 concept, that has nothing to do with poor design skills, whether its for the web or not.

Thank you! I appreciate the honest input. The more input the merrier!

In her defense; she has put out some amazing work and won awards. It's just not site layouts that she has down yet from the looks of things.

If she's open to ideas, get her to have a trawl through some CSS showcase websites.

Some good 'uns are FaveUp, BestWeb and WebCreme.

yeah, I agree with pagey. Colors are also kinda dark, which in turn makes the site look boring and unapealing. The links are kinda big imo, and the content just seems thrown in there.

It is pretty awfull,

No grid for the layout,
Typography is inconsistent,
header graphic is too big and the photo choice looks blurry,
No clear theme to the design - nothing seems to fit, ie the shiny buttons look out of place

theres to many things going on style wise and no consistent theme.
dont like the photo polaroids, whats that about?
pure black backgrounds or text i dont like.

your designer obviously has some skills to put things together but she needs to take some time to refresh and start exploring and researching again, this is the only way to beat designers block
