Crit me please.
It is for a book on the theme 'First'. I am meant to convey the message typographically. What do you think? Does it make sense? Do you know what they are for keeping in mind the theme 'First'. Please tell me if my tracking, kerning and leading are right. Do you think if the typeface is appropriate? Please crit me both typographically and on composition and layout too. All feedback welcome. Thanks ![]() ![]() PS I am thinking of printing my book in gold on pristine white apper due to the concept being FIRST. I have thought of using the Pantone 1 colour throughout my book but it doesn't give a quality feel to it like if it was printed in gold on white. I know the colours I have used arnt right at the moment. I am just experimenting typewise. |

the titanic one is good. using the type to make the outline of the ship. very instant. - i would use a chunkier font personally. - kern 1's in the date. - make the text all black i.e. lose the grey 'un', no need of it. suppose i would simplify the the 'one' fella. i feel you have over fluffed it a by trying to make it look like a rocket. - kern the O_N in 'ONE' ... the O_R in FOR ... and the A_P in LEAP. |

Do you think the rocket one is forced? I mean, I DID set myself boundries i.e. purely typographic but I seem to feel the need to have a minute amount of line work to make it understandable. I tried putting two '1's' back to back to create the top of the rocket but then, the idea of it being 1 and nothing more or less meant it wasn't going to work. PS Should a designer know when tracking, leading etc works well and how much kernign etc should be necessary? Should it come naturally? It did to me last year. Somehow, it feels like i'm slightly loosing my ability to judge these days. I'm meant to be getting better at it, not worse! What's the secret? Any remedies I may not know of? Haha |

Is this a cover for a bound book allgiggles? If it is, I like your last one (Gold (fake) to print on a white iridescent paper with a tint of gold), but have to ask, why only the I S and T different? If you're going to have that effect, you should either expand it to the other words or get rid of it altogether. |

The reason for the I s t = 1st and it is a book on 1st's. I decided to use a san serif font die to the humanist idea of first things first manifesto but also because F1rst was too obvious. I am thinking of having gold blocking on them letters or should I just slightly change the opacity of the colour? or a different tint of gold or is it fine as it is? what about the composition, the layout, the tracking, kerning etc? |

Soup of the Day: Yes it is for the front cover of my book. I'm not sure what my final page will be though. I am thinking of an April Fool's joke but a clever typographic one. Anyone know any typographic jokes apart from the San Seriffe joke The Guardian put towards their readers in 1977? Do you think the BBC ONE April Fools joke (there's a few i.e. penguins that fly etc) may be a good one to use as it is a book on the theme 1st/1. What are your opinions? |

I am thinking of using either the BBC spaghetti plants April Fools joke for my final page or the BBC One flying penguin one. How can I make it clever enough typographically? Any ideas? I am stuck. Should I just base it on a famous April Fools joke as it being relevant typographically probably doesn't matter as the 'April 1' says it all. Last edited by allgiggles1984 : 05-06-2008 at 16:05. |
