Dragon fire salsa

whirlwindwebsites.com/salsa/

A website I am making for a class project. I do more programming than I do design so it is a little plain. The premise is to brand the name and have a working shopping cart. Due to the config on my sever the email functions do not work.

Any and all comments are appreciated.

In my opinion you have a lot of work in front of you.
I suggest you to go see other websites, how they struct information, how they manage colors, etc.
The goal is not to copy, but see what others do...
Since you do not have the cart yet, thats all...
Hope it helps,

GG

What's with all the salsa related websites?

You need to promote the product up front, there isn't even a picture on the home page.

I agree with goncalofbg, for now, you should look for inspiration by looking at other websites. Keep an eye out for packaging and TV ads for brands of food too, there's a lot of things to inspire out there.

My eyes are burning. Sorry, but your color choice is awful. Choose a better color scheme to start.

Hmm... all these SALSA web sites popping up in the 'critique' section...

Are you all in the same class?

Okay, I tried a new color scheme, could you tell me if I am at least going in a better direction I got this idea after looking at a few others sites, I will work on an image for the home page.

Also to answer the earlier question, yes we are in the same class and you might see two or three more salsa sites. Our instructor recommened this site for critiques.

Thanks for your comments so far.

To be honest your 'instructor' should hang his head in shame and hold critiques in your class when you are at this level.

And before he holds the crits, he should try and talk to you about the fundemental basics of design and communication.

Poor teaching.

Ouch. Okay, here's a couple of pointers for you:
  1. I like the dragon logo. It's fitting and it works, but it seems stretched or squished.
  2. The "Hot enough [...]" font is hard to read and blurry.
  3. Your navigation bar lacks depth. Try another font, and center the text in the middle of the box.
  4. Most of your pages don't ever have a header title.
  5. Your 'My Cart' button breaks with a 300 error because your link goes to view_cart.php.php
  6. Your link colors are still the default Blue and Purple.
  7. Ideally, use Arial or Helvetica for normal text. Times New Roman is easier to read in print settings, not web.

Agree with you Mitch. Sending these Web Design 101 students here is like sending them straight to the lions. They won't learn anything here, they need hands-on help.

I agree text in the top banner is hard to read. Colors are blah.
Recipes need how many ingredients to buy for the salsa. Registration needs to show errors and what needs to be fixed on them.
