hit a brick wall!

I recently made my first ever site (1st site) but I'm already sick of it!

I've started redesigning it from scratch but have hit a brick wall. i was happy with how it was going but just can't seem to pull it all together. I'm really unhappy with everything about the header but am not sure where to go with that. I suppose I'm just looking for general feedback on the layout - positive or negative - to help me try and move it on.

I'm having a break from it now and am practicing some jquery techniques for the product page - should be fun as i've never touched that before!

The new design - new layout (the black square with wallet written is to show the rollover states of the featured products)

also - I know the code on the site is terrible - I think it's shaping up a bit better on this new one.

The new layout is infinitely better then the old one. Just add some borders to the images on the bottom, maybe some spacing it it'd be great.

But the first one gave me sore eyes. What's with the super bright blue?

i don't know the blue seemed right at the time for some reason... It didn't take long of it being live for me to change my mind though.

It's not clear from that but there is a nice bit of space under the featured products - That's just a screen grab because I've not uploaded the site properly yet.

Any ideas for the header or do you think its ok? I am going to bring the links down to the bottom of the header. I was also thinking of going the approach of having different designers to a header for us and change it every fortnight... It would make sense I suppose because we like to try and use and promote different designers work.

Well the header is somewhat plain. But the background somewhat compensates for the lack of activity pm the header. You don't want to make the site a bit too busy. By spacing I meant, spacing between one image and another. Or atleast add a thin border to each one.

get you now - I'll try the spacing out.

That was my idea behind the plain header but i just can't figure out what doesn't feel right with it for me.... it's not a major issue for me and I suppose if people don't mind it then I'll keep it as it is. Cheers

That you are sick of your first design already is a good thing. It shows that you have progressed as a designer. Soon you will be sick of your new design and will take it further and you will have progressed further as a designer.

And so it was written.

Try looking attentively at websites you like. Compare them with yours. See what you did wrong.
So far I can euphemistically say your second design is as crap as the first one. Sorry.

Start looking at galleries. Read on typography. Play with colour. If you keep at it, you'll eventually learn.

well that's me told!!

I know i'm not there yet - but I really thought that this new design was a big step up. I know it still needs working and bringing together and I was hoping a bit of feedback could help.

I'm trying to learn all the time and am always looking at other sites...

well...i liked the new one a whole lot better, one think i would check and make sure that u can keep ur image sizes down, cause on the original i got some laggage in the loading process, dont know if you have done that yet on the redesign, but it looks very good, and i def hated the blue..it killed my eyes..

thanks - hopefully the new site should load quicker as I've made all the images smaller files.... That was something I wasn't really too aware of to begin with.

lol..i feel ya..it took me a lil bit to figure that one out...the first site i did i had four images on my main page, and they were 5.8 megabytes, and around that range, and i just put the code in the <img> tag that downsized the pixels..well...didnt realize that that still loads all 5.8 megabytes...o well..i thought that was funny...but it does look good, especially for as new as you are, the original site was decent for a amature tho, the color is just something you learn, i have clients that ask for colors like that, and i tell them hell no everytime

With regard to colour - why don't you take a look at this site?

COLOURlovers :: Color Trends + Palettes

It's a great resource for people who need a bit of colour inspiration. You can put a hex code in and get other suited colours, or you can just browse palettes until you discover a nice colour scheme.
