It does exactly the same as Mental Ray, uses photons of light to recreate global illumination, its just a rival package.

I'm far from a expert, but what regards to my experiences, Vray did a great deal of differences.
Dusteh is probably right, that you can get the same result with Mental Ray, but I found it a lot easier using Vray.

that looks really sweet! I have no idea about 3d, but would say it looks very professional. if that's produced from your 1st attempt, it gives me even more of a kick up the backside to learn some of this stuff... either that, or you're just damn good!

Thanks for all the positive comments. I think I was pretty flukey with this animation though. The nature of it lends itself to simplicity technically, and I think anyone with a basic understanding of how animation works in max could've done it. I've got a long way to go before I reach 'professionalism', but this project certainly taught me a lot.

Now this is some impressive shit;
