Site Redesign WIP

The company I work with is about to make a big launch in January of our site EDIT OUT, However we want to make a redesign to launch a few months afterwards so that we can have a beta test running.

This is the design for the beta site: EDIT OUT

Let me know what you think. Wanted something slick, flashy, and up-to-date.

Also, I will need to redo those main icons, those are just temps.

Well its okay, It's not like it has to be done overnight so I'm not too worried about some blunt opinions right now. But can you offer any suggestions?

suggestion: get rid of the buttons - don't include pixelated graphics - do you have to have that 'BETA' there - if so make it better please.

I first looked at the top half, thought hmm this is ok - until the buttons loaded. then the rest seemed as though you sort of knew where you wanted to go with it, but didn't spend enough time actually doing it. I'd like to see more of a grid based layout. Something really nice could be done for this kind of website - there aren't that many out there at the moment which are actually quite good. So don't spoil your chance to make this site one of those good ones. It seems rather rushed - just how long have you spent on this?

the text BETA looks awful. the logo is flat, and then that is embossed, so it sticks out like a sore thumb
the buttons do look bad.
tabs look bad
Welcome,Drew looks bad
the post, post, search, purchase things would look good if they weren't pixellated.
the table doesn't look bad.

Hey thanks for your suggestions! The beta does need to stay there. I am going to bring up some of these things tomorrow morning in the meeting. What would you suggest to make the buttons better? I didn't spend long on this maybe 30 minutes to an hour, as this was mostly a sketch. It started out being labeled Design 1 and then I wanted to see it in html. We have a lot of time to get this beta version out so I can go back and make it a lot better. I mostly wanted to get some preliminary suggestions -- ones like you made which have been helpful.

Do you know of any "good" sites that does this like you are talking about that I could take a look at. I search for some but I haven't been able to find any that I really like yet.

spend more time on the design. A hell of a lot more time.

Have a scout around on these sites and look for some inspiration:

Design Meltdown

. linkdup . . . . world wide web stimulus . . . . v.1.5000231e (blue) . . . . . . (c) preloaded '99-'02 . . . . .

What you have is OK but it really could do with a bit tidying up.

heres one I quite like:

Loot.com - Classified Ads. Buy, rent or place a free ad to sell anything.

Don't forget the good old YELL

Yell.com the UK's local search engine - search for UK businesses

heres a different style:

UK Directory - search the largest online directory of reviewed sites in the UK.

and the obvious like:

Yahoo!

Lycos

BBC - bbc.co.uk homepage - Home of the BBC on the Internet

Antialiasing is your friend.

And right now, it looks like a placeholder page for when you don't have a server registered to a domain. I'm a big fan of putting links on a toolbar that only really defines the actual hover space when you're hovering over it :P

And the colors are very blunt, even though that's probably not what you wanted. I say a well-defined background or no background. The links/buttons look like Windows XPlastic (I hate to bash everything, but like everyone else has said, there is a lot of work to be done). Glass is not Plastic - that's a good thing to remember.
