Online Culture Magazine

I'm working with a friend to start a local online underground music and culture website. I've spent a good part of the evening working on this mock-up and I like it quite a bit, though, I figured if anywhere DT would be the place to get an opinion. Let me know what you think. (*NOTE* The copy for the Deerhoof review was taken from Home: Pitchfork and was simply used as a placeholder)

It looks good except the diagonal lines are really off-putting and the borders around the nav buttons draw too much attention for my liking.

It's not amazing. To be honest, the design makes me not want to read it. It doesn't seem very sophisticated, as a "culture" magazine would normally be.

Maybe I made the world "culture" too ambiguous. What we're doing is writing an online magazine about UNDERGROUND culture, not the common conception of culture. However, what would you do to make you want to read it?

I wouldn't give it a dark background.

uit's not bad but you need to seprarate some aspects of it from the continuous background, give a little different color/ brightness as background for some of the content and it will feel more complete imo.. nothing too drastic, just enough of a difference just to soothe the mind's quest of boundaries

It reminds me too much of SlideShowPro's look & feel.

make it fun! It's so rigid and formal, the opposite of bands like Deerhoof's feel surely? This is a blog but you get what i mean, it's slap dash, illustrative etc: Said the Gramophone - an mp3 blog

Break the mould a bit fella, that could just as much be a website promoting some sort of new web app.

Thank you for the suggestions, I'll definetly work with some of them and post an update when I'm finished.
