Construction Website

[ REMOVED ]

Still very much a work in progress, but opinions at this stage would definitely help in the next few days.

Your using at least 500 pixels of the screen just for the top header and navigation, you will be pushing the content way down on the average users screen.

Design wise its clean but not very inspiring and too dark. It just looks like one of them templates you can download from the numerous template sites out there. Also, what's with the triangle above the navigation?

Yea, I thought that the header might be a bit too massive, but he just keeps adding and adding to it. Maybe I need to make an executive decision and just shrink his logo and all that slogan crap to about 70-80 px.

The triangle is going to be about his three companies. I came up with the "pyramid" to separate the three different companies or (arms as he calls them) because [ REMOVED ] is the company he started out with (his base), then you have [REMOVED] and then this new company which I dont know the name of yet. Anyhow, its going to be a way to navigate between each section and the color scheme will change accordingly.

EDIT: I agree now that I look at it, it seems way too dark, im going to try a white background.

actually i like the fat header, it makes the design feel more classy. it looks nice but i agree with it being like a template, and IMO it looks rather similar to a blog.
I think with some more work it can be nice. Maybe extend one of the colours throughout the bg like the brownish colour or black header, extend that across the background to break the boxy/bloggy feel of it a bit.

Thanks for the feedback guys, also if you click the main link (in the top right) it will take you to a work in progress home page animation.

If I was you I would get rid of the triangle and then just have the different arms of the company as links in the top right hand corner. I would reduce the size of the logo and get rid of the slogan. Then I would stick the navigation inside the black header, running along the bottom of the header. That way you can get rid of the whole purple middle section and have much more room for content.

Sorry but the animation is just very unprofessional and serves no use. You wouldn't see a big construction company using something like that.

Hi Drewy,
to be honest: i donīt like it very much.
- Too many different font type/sizes
- The rounded corners donīt fit with the "normal corners" of the different backgrounds
- Round logo, then the triangle, then square/rounded buttons etc ... this is too much.
- Stripes in the header, gradient in the middle, gradient in the buttons, the red line under the header .... too much for the eye.

Try to design it more "eye friendly". Find ONE style and try to work on it. You are mixing to much ... and when you do this the users eye canīt concentrate or focus on the important things on the site.

i hope i could help

all the best,
thomas

Well, it is work in progress.

Someone kill me now. Okay so these are the colors that the client insists on. I tried to make it look the best I could with the parameters. Does any one have any suggestions to make it look better? Apparently these three colors (red, yellow and green) are very important to him because of his son being killed in mexico or something weird like that. Anyhow, my boss says that I HAVE to make it in these colors to keep the client happy. So any suggestions on making it look better would be appreciated.

red and green are primary opposites and will fight with each other in a design unless handled very carefully, could you use the colours sparingly on a neutral white background

It's a bit late with regard to this project, but in future projects I'd put more effort in defining roles with the client. They need to understand their input is welcome/requested when it's time to 'design' the features and abilities of the site with regard to visitor satisfaction. On the other hand, the client is not a designer and should *not* be micro-managing the colors/layout/details at all.

...All of which doesn't help your present situation; I'd say you do what he asks, collect your money, and leave this one site off of your portfolio.

Holy crap the colour change has made your site go from average to extremely awful. It looks like you just vomited onto my screen!

yeah the new colour's are horrible. I don't know what to say about this. I'm not a web designer but i know it just doesn't seem to work at the moment.

There are all sorts of variations of yellow, green and red. I know you said the client insists on using these colors, but try to tone them down. If you do it gradually, he probably won't notice. I got a headache from looking at the bright version....

Not sure what kind of a company you're working for or how old you are... all important factors in how to handle it...

But generally speaking, if you don't need it for a portfolio and your boss doesn't care, crank it out, don't put your name on it and take the money and run.

I agree w/ everything said above. This wont be on my portfolio but it will at least be good for the money. Both my boss and the client are very happy with the changes I made and is now satisfied. I guess he doesnt care that the viewers to his website will have seizures.

lol herkalees. and christ this is awful. I think the top square header is such a waste of space and the stripes look bad, so does the font and the red colour, I hate the wordart style gradient in the rounded one, the triangle is blurred, the navigation looks nearly 10 years old and the main content area is bland bland bland, not a fan of the top and bottom couple of pixel stripes either, oh and it just seems to be floating nowhere.

Even though this was for a client and their needs I would probably take the money, kill them and redo their site completely.
