Ha! Will the 21st century's Irma Bombeck please stand up?

Looks fun. Maybe the purple banner is a bit dark, you could lighten it and add some red so it sorta matches the rest. Then use a still lighter shade of that for the book blurb background.
I think using Street Upper typeface for the words Ask Nora is a bit distracting - the underlines are odd. I'd change it to standard Street.
The bugs are a nice touch. Websites should feature more arthropods.

- the colours seem *almost* right. There's just something a little off.

- don't try to "visually align" the nav text. put em on a straight line.

- are the recent articles/categories context sensitive to the nav? if so there should be a current state indicating which tab they belong to. Otherwise they should have a different background colour or a separator to indicate that they are independent of the main nav.

looks nice otherwise. It's different
