Need design tips
I have gotten the task of designing a website for a carpenter who builds wooden houses. The problem is, I have no ideas. I try to make a design first in Photoshop before doing the site in HTML, but I either end up with something that's too messy and I use to many effects or I end up with something that's just too plain, simple and standard. I guess I'm more of a coding guy, HTML, PHP, JavaScript, etc, so I think in squares and tables I guess. I'm not able to visualize round shapes and get get unique ideas. That's why I'm asking for some help and a few tips. The website isn't anything fancy, I mean, there no news and it won't be regular updated. Just a small site with some basic info, pictures of built houses, and contact info. I have attached an image of the current design I have. (The image of the house is just a temp I found on the net). I want it to be simple, but somehow it seems "too simple", you know? As you can see it's very standard and quite frankly boring. I'll appreciate any input. |

Now then. Something that's too simple isn't a bad thing. If you're using a specific area (e.g. pixel width) then having something behind everything else, especially for those with large screens, can make it look less plain. e.g. www.yorkdomains.co.uk/various/Iwaap/ Regards, Jon |

That looks great! I'm not gonna use that exactly because that wouldn't be fair Thanks for taking the time to make the example. It gave me ideas and I got an understanding for simple yet less plain designs. Thanks for the help! |

I think its a mistake a lot of web design beginners make; they think there needs to be lots of effects and lots going on, hence the drop shadows , bevels etc you see on a lot of amateur sites. When somthing simple can look a lot more appealing. |
