Subsist Magazine

Have a look at this - especially if you're using safari or mac ie5.1.
Click Portfolio Layout for the next page.

Cheers peoples - much appreciated.

• The white name credit bar beneath the feature image is a bit loud compared to the rest of the colours in use. It draws the eye away from the real content - which would presumably be the image itself or the blurb accompanying it. It's a link, not a banner/ad.

• The width is so near, yet so far from fitting within a 800x600 screen. Being so close I wonder, couldn't the layout be tightened up just enough to fit? - especially since the portfolio layout page fits with space to spare.

•Something's going wrong with the contributors list in Safari.
The list appears as though the line-height is set to 0.
S'fine in MSIE5Mac.

•Font colour for the footer (copyright, …) lacks contrast with its background and is barely readable. It wouldn't hurt the page to lighten it up a few grades.

• Is there liable to be a 200Kb image on many pages thoughout the site?
You're probably not gonna win many fans by doing that, if so.

• Not sure about the phrase "…culturally sensitive society…". It sounds a bit self-consciously 'pc' as though it were written by someone who would sincerely rather die than offend anyone.
"…culturally open society…" might work better.

•• Layout appears consistent between Safari and MSIE5Mac, aside from the contribtors list issue.

Very nice, I agree with Bill about the credit bar (a bit loud)

I'm not sure about the "click-ability" of your links - the page feels very static and, in my opinion, doesn't encourage the user to stay and have a few at your site. With that huge image on the left, reading your "message" seems futile and unexciting, and I feel like the eye keeps going back to the image.

My suggestion would be to enhance contrast for the words that matter, and to kill the verbiage and go for some key words that look really enticing. It'll be hard with this layout, I realize, but hey, our job is to solve problems.

Try to pass on your message a little clearer and people might feel like hanging at your site for a bit: think IMPACT.

This is the bit I can't figure out right now. Any ideas?

Optimised image is 140k rather than 200k btw.
'Not much better' I hear you grumble.
