Is this any good? What would you do to improve it?

I am making a website for a friend (for free) and was just wondering what you thought of the design, and what I could do to improve it? At the moment its just one page to demo the design, and the news page layout.

http://sychosis.lukearmstrong.co.uk/

So I would appreciate it if you could take a look and tell me what you would do to it. I'm no designer, and day to day I get given client approved (albeit poor) photoshop designs to code up into a website, so don't get chance to improve on the design side of things.

Thanks

In the right hand bar (and I'm not really a design either), a few of the elements seem to be aligned differently. I'd have them all centred or all right justified. I don't think it's that bad, I don't think it's that good but I don't think much of my design is that good either. There's something missing from it - what I don't know - but it's just a little uninteresting and doesn't have a great deal of impact.

I have aligned it right now, see if its better, I think it looks less odd now.

I think it could be better with images, and an interesting content area background/shape/fade. But quite what exactly, fuck knows.

Cheers for your quick feedback

I like it. The font you used for the header and links are nice. The three colours (black, lime and grey) works well, I'm tempted to move your ad banner to the left so it aligns with the news box. If you really want to spruce it up you could put some illustrations in - skateboard style ones or experiment with different colours.

would it look better with the navigation on the left, and the content on the right then?

I am not a fan of flexible full width layouts, gives the impression of wide open spaces.

Try a 800 or 900 fixed width and centred?

My suggestion would be to put the navigation on the left. And the navigation looks pretty dismembered, perhaps it could use a black rectangular box behind it, just like the main content.

Yes but then you'll have to align the navigation text left too.

I'm not saying he's stupid, I don't think a lot of non-designer would know to do that!
He did have a mix of alignment on that section before Transmogrify pointed it out!

He managed to do it with the nav text on the right though (aligned the text to the right)

Yes he did after he was advised to either align it all to the right or center it all. He chose right which was good off him cos it would look dreadful centred.

Maybe in the future I shouldn't give a designer's point of view, get criticized for pointing out the obvious although I personally would rather a web developer point out the obvious when I'm asking for web advise.

Can I just suggest something else cos it's really bugging me, can you move the banner up abit more so that you have more space for the advertise here text... it's touching the news box at the moment.

Message to Nick (Sylan)

09/03/2007 I am keen on learning c#, and my work want me to develop in ASP.NET. So I am going to create the website and content management in ASP.NET. Thanks for the offer of hosting, but I will be hosting it on our dedicated windows server instead. Could you please change the DNS for the domain name to:

ns1.wbdevelopment.co.uk
ns2.wbdevelopment.co.uk

Looks pretty good. Cant really fault it.
