buystone.co.uk

On a placement year from uni at my families business and been asked to attempt to create an online shop for the business.

Wana be a web desinger primarily but i've heard the market for jobs is probably too competetive so probably concentrate on a business based job as my degree is Business and Technology

Only got some knowledge (through reading) of html, what do you think for an attempt?

Congratulations on making something that seemingly works, but it really looks and feels like it was made by an amateur.

Not too bad really - a very good first attempt. The visuals are rather old-school and basic though.

What, you gonna beat me up for looking at your site? I just wanted some stone...

It's just horrible. Why would you want to ruin your family business like this?

Not very helpful. Also on your 'Slate' product page, all the thumbnails link to some cobbles. Despite the fact I like the word cobbles, this is bad. Not going to buy from a site like this. If I was you I'd hire someone that knows what they're doing, otherwise this could end up doing damage to your folks business.

Well looking at competitors sites I thought I could do as good a job as they have done. To me they don't look anything special (I aint a pro tho).

www.dandys.org
www.graveldirect.co.uk

I aint gona give up on this and get someone else to do it (not yet anyway), they have, spent a few grand probably and the results aren't amazing.

The site ain't finished yet, regarding missing pages, link checking, seo, etc.

Thanks for your comments

If you want to compare it to the other sites i'd appreciate it

Just cause your competitors sites suck doesn't mean your site can suck too.

It's a bit harsh to say it sucks. It's a bit confusing and not the most attractive site in the world - in particular all those lines throw it off a fair bit (and makes it look like it uses loads of frames, oddly enough) but it does work at least.

Well those who suggested get a "pro" to do it, having seen competitors sites and been told they "suck" too, do you blame me for going down this path of DIY?

How much would you boys estimate a decent site (in your eyes) with say 200 products, would cost? And what guarantees would I have that it would be £££s better than the one I've created, not forgetting I may be able to improve it with some work.

I didn't say the site sucked. I was just trying to tell him that you can't think "at least my site is better than theirs" though it is important, it is not all that matters.

the amount of products is irrelevant unless you're your designer to put them all in

all you need is a site design, and ecommerce soltution then you manage the stock
