comp for illustration site

I'm designing a site for an illustrator friend of mine, and was wanting some critique. Here's a jpg:
http://www.panzerkunst.com/stuff/comp_4.jpg

All of the text is placeholder, as is the big image at the top. Just so you know, that image will be sized correctly, and won't have the "extension" to the right. I'm designing for 1024x768. Thanks.

like I said, the pixel stretch is a placeholder for a longer image.

To be honest there's not much I like about it. It seems a bit disjointed, the colours are muddy and there are too many non-harmonious fonts. If you're going to go for a minamilist look then these are the things that you need to get right.

I like it alright. It's a great start, at least.

That image forces me to scroll at 1024, by the way.

jase1000: Thanks for the honest crit. I was wondering what you meant by disjointed though. Is it the fact that the logo is below the nav, or that maybe the news/blog should be to the left? I'd like some clarification. As for the colors, those were hand picked by the illustrator, and they go with his work, so that's the reasoning behind that.

Also, pgo, when I get this thing coded it shouldn't scroll. Can't control much with a Jpg!

My main problem right now is that the logo is so boring. I'm getting Dave (the illustrator) to do some of his magic to it and make it "his", so it should have more oomph soon.

I dunno, I kinda like Dave's site as it is.

redesigning it would be an injustice, to that old meathouse.

He says he wants his site to be "more adult" and less playful.

I don't mind the layout, it's more the fact that the graphical elements don't really tie in together.

You've used Verdana as a font for the nav and another font altogether for the main content - this isn't working IMO and I think you should just choose one or the other. Also, the grunge graphics are a bit weak (almost as if you're unsure of using them) and I'd like to see them beefed up a bit.

Sort these out and I'm sure it'll look loads better.

I would put the nav under the logo, so that it's more releated to the actual content. Oh and redo the type of the nav as suggested by jas1000.

indeed.

but converting his rather unique site into a boring blog / web 2.0 template site would be the wrong move.

Playful sells, you should get manco to post here explaining what he feels is wrong with his site It's an experience and I think that counts for something in this sea of clone blogs. Just look at www.furifuri.com for example. Portfolio websites don't really conduce freelance business but if there is an experience to be had at least they are memorable.

The work you did on his previous site is ALIVE! The new one looks DEAD

the top illustarion looks low quality, as if was resized to a bigger size from a smaller version. also the logo should be above the nav, no matter if you want to be original or not, those things have been tested and they work. And what is that underline under the mouse hover nav items, get rid of that. Goodluck.

One big reason he wants a redesign is to make it easier for him to update the site with his newest work. As it is, it's kind of a multi-tiered process. We both thought that an HTML/CSS site would be better for that. Also, I believe that the best portfolio sites are just a frame for the content. They're about the WORK, not about the site, so that's why we both agreed that a clean, unobtrusive site was in order.

why not let agencies do that (generic blog looking web2.0 website with a "gallery" on it) and update the fancy flash site with the new work?

fancy flash site is much better to display the art. you guys plan to lobotomise the persona of the art.

hmm, what you need is a poll, on his site!!
