how did i do?

hey DT people!

i've just redesigned this site, and i was hoping i could get some feedback here about the changes i've made. i'd be really grateful for comments on the markup, load times, browser compatibility, usability, accessibility, on page SEO and the general feel.

also if there is anything wrong like broken links that i've missed, typos, layout errors etc i'd appreciate it if you let me know!

thank you!

>> old design
>> new design

P.S. does anybody know of any good image compression freeware? (for the banner) thanks!

aint that the truth! haha! but do you think its good enough?

i'm not a web designer or web anything, im actually the daughter of the owners of the houses my dad wanted a website to show prospective buyers abroad. so i just learnt how to make websites in the last few months, from iframes to tables to html transitional CSS to another refined CSS thing and now this XHTML strict and CSS.

what things do you think i could improve on?

Honestly, did it really change that much? Besides the layout and fonts? I like the old typography and the layout seems more clustered and not very structured. Use the grid format maybe?

it really isnt bad at all if you arent a designer - i have seen an awful lot worse on here - you seemed to have grasped type legibility quite well although you could brush up on the alignment. Script fonts (used in the header) are hard to use and can land up looking a bit twee. I would suggest using a cleaner serif font (serif fonts are the ones with curly 'kicks' such as Times etc). Drop the outer glow effect on the header text and avoid any text effects to be honest. Try using a plain background colour for the header background rather than the image - I know this all sounds very stripped down but clean and strong colours speak for themselves - you already have photography in there so not much more is needed. That's my 2p anyway

what was the motivation for the redesign?

it doesn't look much different, and in a few ways it looks like the new version is the older version (i.e. the gallery section).

i didn't "view source" so maybe you took a site that was using tables and made it standards compliant CSS...

aside from maybe lou, most comments have not been very constructive. is there really a need to tell me to buy a book on typography? or that im not a designer? coulda just said what was wrong and how i could improve or provide some links to something helpful that i could read or good examples i could look at.

so i guess that means this forum is for experts only then, no newbies allowed. fine. bye.
