site crit
Hi folks - been working on this www (dot) redsquirrelmedia.co.uk/test/ - It's very much a work in progress. I'm involved pretty heavily with this company, almost be working inhouse if it takes off. Everything is changing - almost daily but I could do with a general review today. It's a bit div tastic, the colours have been deepened but not uploaded as the new CSS file has structual changes. The photos are botched - each one will represent the content - the Illis are roughs too. Portfolio is rough and ready - we have a bunch of new stuff to add... I've been pulled a from one post to another - design by comittee... so I'm not feeling it at all anymore - but I think I can turn it round Anyway - usual honest crit please... |

Looks good, does the job. the flash transitions aren't great or particularly intuative but it didn't offend. think it would have looked much better with a lot more padding around everything rather than just the 10px or so you have now. I know design by comittee well so you've done alright. not far from me either. |

You mean Leeds? - thought we all lived in Leeds Quote:
No - they're great for brochure sites - twinned with SSI and CSS I think they're fekking marvelous. Tell me a good reason to ditch them (apart from the extra comment tags) |

Nothing wrong with using Dreamweaver, latest versions are excellent for coding. Bit snobbish to suggest otherwise if you ask me. Like the site btw, despite the flash headers. But as you said, not your doing. |

Who said anything about clicking a few buttons? Just because beginners often use DW's design view method doesnt mean the rest of us do. Photoshop is used by pretty much everybody, amateurs and pros alike; doesnt mean its any less valid an application to use. Anyway, we digress. As I said, site looks good to me..... |

One thing I notices wrong right away is the way the squirrel is facing on the flash (opposite to the logo), This should be fixed, as you want the brand symbols to be consistent. Ditch the photos in the headers (home, about etc.) and go all the way with the funky illustrations. Make the background color white, and change the sandy right bar color to something more lively. Overall the site looks good, the portfolio works are top notch. |

I code the CSS by hand. Use DW to ally my linkage, it's very easy to compose using SSI and templates, the php support is much improved, FTP is handy, the team integration is good, the 'check in & out' features for contribute sites are nice, local servers can be easily set up for multiple browser testing, excellent find & replace tool.... It's biggest short coming is it's (unjustified) reputation among text based code purists (+ the admittedly squiffy code created by the uninitiated using design-view). This site will be published without DW comments. I've never just used design view. I have a fairly good understanding of semantic and accessible HTML, everything is optimised, we make sure it works in Opera, FF, IE5/6, Netscape... Your simplistic "Everyone who uses dreamweaver doesn't know how to code" spiel is naive and, to me, makes you look a little unprofessional. Look at most advertised web-design jobs - just about all require DW experience... Why? because it is not just a WYSIWYG web pages made easy designers tool - it's an integrated development environment with very very powerful tools. Your points are moot - all software has limitations - DW is the best tool in it's field. Credit where credit is due. |

Nice - I work in Otley as well. I'll buy you a small beer. Adras - cheers for the pointers - tend to agree about the squirrel. The photos are illustrative of the ones we'll be using - as we do tend to take a lot of em - just haven't used ones that represent the content - they'll have more punch when I have the time to skim Picasa - eventually they'll link back to the photography service section and a lightboxesque slideshow. Lucasarts/stylin328 - cheers for the positive comments. |
