My site up for crit (gulp!)

Hi guys,

Could you lot have a quick look at this portfolio site and let me know what you think. I recently had to go down to 2 days a week at my current job so I had to put something up pretty quick.

www.gregkirk.com

Couple of the sites I'm still working on in their and I also know I need to work on the PDF.

Cheers!

Like it alright. The background - "spotlights" I'd call it - is kind of distracting/hard to look at.

Thanks. Once I get some more sites up I'm planning on adding a work archive page.

Gotta agree with pgo on the background image, makes me eyes go funny. Other than that, I like.

with the background issue my recommendation would be just to have one single spotlight effect....like the style and simplicity of the CV pdf.

Not a big fan sorry, the colours you have used do not go well together, the header is not very nice to look at as well as the titles with the stripes too.

The glowing bg doesnt look right, i'd suggest a subtle dark shadow instead.

Work on it more, to make it feel less rushed and with abit more of a professional feel.

Not really crazy about it too. The designs showcased in your portfolio seem kind of blah. I mean they're not terribly bad, they're just kind of whatever.

I may get a lot of heat for this, but is it just me or doesn't it seem like most UK design co's seem just boring?

no way. most of the best design I have seen on the web comes out of the UK.

I never said I was the shit, that's just the experience I've had. I thought there actually might be a cultural explanation for this, ie. british being more practical, down to earth, blunt, etc.

Btw, I don't know what if you saw my latest post in the thread you linked my design from, but I explain why it's cut off like that. Not sure if you're criticizing my design being cut off, or the actual full design, that was up earlier, but is now cut off like that due to uploading issues with deviantart.

Looks great but the readability is a bit of a problem for people with bad eyes

If you don't want heat, best not to make ludicrous generalisations.

Color could be much better. You should try to make it look fresher by fixing the color tones.

I think you're practically "there" but the shapes and overall looks lack depth. It's too 2D for 2006, if you know what I mean.

What's wrong with "2D"?

(by which I assume you mean "flat"...)

No, I don't know what you mean. Could you explain it, sans attitude, please.

I think that, no matter what people say about gradients and 3D effects in photoshop, gradients and surface light/texture effects are a good thing when well used. In my opinion, solid colors look dull and boring. That kind of "artsy" visual was a cool trend maybe 15 years ago, but not today. That's what, to my eye, gives a "passé" look to the overall site. Maybe the designer should be more open to the modern (post 2000) trends, because the graphic elements used look too "vintage" (in a wrong way) to be pleasant to the eye.

As an example, this forum has a flat-looking header (it doesn't rely on effects to pop out of the screen) but it's modernized by the highly saturated blue, the carefully placed text shadow, and the surface texture. Probably it's a default template, I don't know and I don't care, I'm just saying why it looks more modern.
