Programmer Meet Designer - Criticize Away!

Hey guys & gals!
Yesterday I finished this site: http://programmermeetdesigner.com

It's a site for programmers to find designers (and vice versa!) to work together. I've gotten the opinions of some programmers, so I though I'd get some designer opinions too! =)

So: what do you think of the design, the usability and the idea?

Thanks!

the idea behind the site seems like a good one.........overall simple and to the point. Only thing that bothers me slightly is that choice of font on the main page. Doesnt seem to fit the rest of the site.

I hope this takes off.....in the right hands it could be sucessful.

Your left and right border should be consistent in my opinion for both the header and the body section. Nice.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

@fetusface: Yes, one of the other people I asked said the fonts bother him -- but he couldn't explain why. But since you're a design (assuming) maybe you can tell me how I can make it better? Thanks.

@datahound: Alright, thanks! I'll make the content and the header align (if that's what you meant).

I think its an excellent networking idea; however I'm not too convinced on the overall layout of the page. There's no real separation between the main areas of content; everything blends into one big lump of text, especially on the homepage. That isnt helped by the Google text ads either, I think you need to make them more visually separate from the other elements on the page- at the moment they're getting lost in the rest of the text, making the page look cluttered and wont be clicked!

I dont think it would take much for you to make the layout far more appealing and easy on the eye. Perhaps a simple background colour scheme for the columns would be the easiest way to achieve this.

Are you a programmer or a designer?or was this made as a collaboration.

I'm not feeling it generally. Something like this feels like it needs to be cleaner, dare I say more corporate. It needs to scream professional, if it's going to work. At the moment I get programmer blog site from it, no real identity.

Sounds like a nice idea though. Wish you luck with it.

basicly, i don't like websites who take up the whole screenwidth without a clear layout.
this is just too big , in your face and not tightly structured.

I think the idea is great and it's not something I've come across yet, there's massive potential here if you market it correctly. One downside is that all the listings so far want jobs for free...I think this could clutter the site eventually any may put some people off.

Have you got any plans for seperation of Paid & Free listings ? If not, I think it could be well worth doing as it gives the user a choice on which area to look in. I know a lot of people don't have the time (or simply just don't want to bother) doing stuff for free.

Good luck with the venture, there's potentially lots of good things that could come out of this.

Nice concept, but I don't like the font at all. Isn't that font's that banks use in their letters to customers or something???

You do need to look at making the site jump out more or be more appealing to the eye. Pretty much much of what has ben already said. This goes for the logo too.

Required knowledge: Must be able to build a site equivalent to the BBC news website or Ebay for free as Im too much of a tight wodd to pay you and would much rather keep all the money for my fat over indulged self. Must be contactable 24 hours a day and work to whatever deadlines I set (and that does mean you may have to give up your marriage). All applicants must do 3 seperate web design to win the job which I am allowed to sell on for some extra cash because I fancy a new greenhouse. Also, did I mention I want it all for free because yes, I do think you are an idiot. GOOD LUCK!

This kind of shit is going to ruin your site, I think you should moderate every listing so all must be approved.

The idea is there, just work on the design, and don't steal others backgrounds.

The logo? it's like typical American College.

Ok, Thank you everyone for the replies.
- I will be implementing a free/paid filter so the people can see the type of jobs they want
- The logo - yes, it's not stunning. I'm a programmer, that's the best I can do =(. However, if someone wants to make one really quickly for me, they'd have my eternal gratitude and they'd get a link at the bottom of the page saying "Logo by _____" =).
- The background - yes, I did take it from bigcarterl. I apologize. Shame on me. I will change it asap. =(

- those of you complaining about the font - are you talking about the main font of the page (which is Arial, then sans-serif at the moment) or the font in the logo?

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply. I'll try to implement your suggestions today.

UPDATE: changed the background to a crappy one I made

UPDATE: implemented price filter on main page and search page.

UPDATE: now that I think about it, if someone has the time to come up with just a design mockup (you don't need to (X)HTML-ize it), I would really appreciate it and they'd get a link to their site on the bottom of every page for as long as their design is in use. Anyone interested?

First step is to ditch the high school team jersey font.

Otherwise, it's off to a good start. Good idea, too - it has potential if you do it right.
