dead link etc
Nice clear site. I was only going to point out a dead link, but I got a little carried away. Apologies for being pedantic, but... 1. You've got a dead link on the "Contact Me" page. http://www.pat-oneill.com/docs/quote-request.doc 2. Does the flashy image preview functionality gracefully degrade (e.g. when JavaScript is off)? If not, ditch it. It also adds crap at the top of the page (when CSS off - annoying if using a screen reader). 3. Perhaps provide an access key or skip link to the content. Not sure if this is too important though, because you've given your content div a sensible id. 4. You've got 2 h2s on the accessibility page (I think the latter should be an h3). 5. The accessibility page fails html and css validation (though the latter could be caused by the former). Haven't checked the others. As I said, sorry for being pedantic. Overall I like the simplicity of your design. I'm of the opinion that a personal site, when it'll be shown to potential customers, should be as clear and informative as possible and going nuts with the design could prevent this. You've got a portfolio with which to show off. Oh yeah, I like the use of your sketches. As someone has already said, it adds a personal touch. I don't like the "golf course" ;-) but it could look better if you increase the contrast. |

I thought that was a good first post... Managed to get in 5 digs about content, functionality, markup, accessibility and design, all before saying hello. And about a site written by someone who's obviously a better designer that I. Very thorough ;-) |

1. Thanks for pointing that out - I'll fix it when I get home this evening. 2. Yes, it degrades. Yes, it adds stuff to the top of the page, but only with JavaScript enabled - and I'm not too worried about screen readers. I don't anticipate a lot of blind people hiring a web designer. But I could be wrong. 3. Yeah, I'll skip the "skip to content" because I've made sure to make the content div the highest in source order - all that's before it should be an <h1> and a <ul>. 4. I'll look into that. 5. Thanks, I completely forgot to validate things. Quote:

Hi, I really like the site! The only problem I could find was a tiny little spelling mistake... On the services page uner "Website design and redesign" It says "inside AN out and keep up to pace with the rapid development of web standards and best practices." Is the an bit supposed to be and? |
