Exactly. My only thought it a detail of a painting.

I'm surprised no one likes the colors. I do.

I like the blue but not the orange... the colours remind me of a hosting company I think, trying to remember who. Still I'm not one to talk when it comes to colours on a site.

Thanks again for the comments all. I consulted with the graphic designer at work (since he's educated in GD and I'm educated in painting...of course you all would probably hate my paintings if you think this was bland and drab) and he said he liked it and didn't think it needed anything, really - we both agree that adding "images" just for their own sake is pointless. He noted the little arrow bullets and suggested continuing that "arrow-in-circle" theme throughout. I tried it, but no dice. They look nasty scaled up.

Anyway, a bit more spice (ahem...gradients):

Portfolio is the hover state if you couldn't tell. Also did one with a footer similar to the nav bar:

I don't like the gaps, looks like the site is falling apart. The footer looks better white, as you currently have it on there.

maybe this approach will make it look less dull....

Interesting thought - I haven't really considered doing a light on dark body.

I didn't really care for the breaks either...and definitely preferred the white footer.

Fred was quoting you. I think he's saying that as a 'web designer' (not just developer), you should be able to come up with something creative.

Like datahound said - you could get your camera out. Or use your web work, or drawings and paintings. Just something to liven it up and show the creative side of design and development.

hey... i looked at your paintings, and they are good! shame i can't see more... the minimal ones..
look like an contemporary geometric mark rothko... nice and subtle. maybe you could pull the geometric style into your portfolio.... maybe something more suggestive of your own creative style!

I definately think you need something pictorial in there - It wouldnt just be for the sake of it as you said, but it shows how you can implement imagery with graphics, therfore promoting a skill. It can also be a concept that carries on throughout the site....eg - you are making a point about being available for freelance work - why dont you stick in an image to represent that you are available (something a bit comedy perhaps...maybe not a whoaring prostitute though) hee

What it really needs is a better menu with an active state. Nav at the minute looks really cheap.I'd also put the footer colour you've got above behind the header. Looks a bit out of place as it is.

Thanks. I have a lot more - just not online. And all the photography of them is fairly lousy. Rothko is one of my biggest influences - along with Barnett Newman, Robert Ryman, Robert Irwin, Edward Hopper, Richard Diebenkorn, and many others. You'd think that would translate from art to design, but in a lot of ways it doesn't - different intent/thought-processes.

It's been decided that it needs more spice and more imagery. So, I'll get on that tonight and over the course of the week - if I'm not too burned out from making the same website over and over at work.

Damn. I was thinking about "pgo's red light district".

Thanks for the replies all.

I guess datahound and weldo were right - the hardest website to make is your own.

I love them ! here is what I thought : wow bastard, this site is great !

it's clear, clean, fast, friendly. Nice type, classy rollovers. No really, I'd love to have done it myself !

And believe me, I would never trust a freelance that have a demonstrative personnal website.
A good freelance works too much to have the time for that.

You proved here again that you were efficient (was it to be proved ? ;-) ), that's what's needed down there.

PS : I'm not gay

I actually like it too. I agree with the white footer. I do like the small gradient you added on the nav, but the hover is overdone compared to everything else. Might I suggest a simple white tab idea? Also, a little more white space between your left and middle section...and finally, maybe a dashed border on separating your center and right column. See image... (Ignore fonts. I didn't bother matching too well...)

Thanks again for the comments, gentlemen. I'm busy at work and will have something a bit more spicy tomorrow.

All comments are being absorbed. Like a muthafuckin' sponge, yo.
