first css

Ok folks this is what ive been up to for the past while. Its my first attempt at a CSS layout, some of the semantics are up the left, and theres too many abs positioned divs. But i guess its a step in the right direction, let me know ur thoughts at this stage, as theres still a bit of work ongoing.

from your code:

<div class="specHmeStrapText">
<p></p>
Established in 1960, Acheson &amp; Glover is a
leading manufacturer of paving and flags,
... ... ...

put the text within the p tag. If you have the web dev toolbar for FF this will show as a warning

Also in FF there's a slight display problem in the search area (see image)

and how come everything looks blurred?

I'd say you have - it's artifactalicious.

Code is quite bulky, but I won't harass you since you're making a solid effort. Not a huge fan of the design. I think it would look better with higher quality images. Some of which could probably be GIFs...

Read about GIF's, JPEG's and PNG's. A bit of knowledge about why these were created and what their strengths and weaknesses are will be a help.

General rule: use GIF's for graphics with blocks of flat colour - eg logos and Jpegs for photos or images with large change/range of colours

I am aware of that. and as far as im concerned the correct formats have been chosen for each file. I was looking for an example file that needs changed.

Round the white text - all fuzzy and horrible, the photo should be jpg and the green block a gif. Same with the other 2

from what I can see he's used the right format, he's just compressed them too much (which he's already admitted).

made my eyes go funny. flashbacks.

Aye. I don't really mind the design - a little 2000 but has development potential. I would recommend using the same background colour in your subsections - theys feels like a new site like.

Oli's got it spot on regarding the images. + you have some nasty pixelation on your search/nav boxes - particularly the corners - they needn't be optimised - a gif that size should be used at it's highest colour potential - won't make a noticeable change to 56k users and will always look its best.

Not spot on. Sometimes you just have to use the one image and test whether is looks best as a gif, jpg, or png. compressions the problem.

but I'm not in an agreeable mood today.

True. Do what fits the individual design, don't just blindly follow someone else's rules.

And you're being a right twat today.
