Design Advice
Hiya all! Im new to this forum but I would like you all to help me on a project. Ive came up with a design, and than changed it according to comments, and now I have two different color schemes. Could you all help me decide which one of the two is better and also advice on what to add onto or change. Thanks... Gray Version Black Version |

i reckon a white or very light grey/neutral bg would look nicer. Switch the two columns around and have the main content on the left. Maybe allign the main headings to the left aswell, i dont think they look good on the right. If youre gonna use that green bambo image, use that colour somewhere else in the design, as at the moment its overpowering and really sticks out. Maybe spend a little more time on the illustration of the kung fu man as he could be misconstrued as a splodge of love mayonnaise. Hope that helps! |

What you said makes sense. But are you saying eliminate the bamboo background and replace with a solid colour? Also, I understand what your saying about the headings and the content. Ill spend some time on the layout of the content. But, what exactly could I improve on the "kung fu" man... Heh, how could I make it not look lik ea spodge of love mayonnaise... :P |

i meant the bg of the container would look better a lighter colour.. haha as for improving the kung fu man... maybe play around with the positioning of the image and include his head? or pick an image that translates to a clearer silohuette? |

Tell us more about what you're doing with this site. Design should follow purpose - form follows function. I see that it's a portfolio, but for what - ninjas and bamboo? Also, those are both nasty looking. Please tell me this isn't another "I made a website, now I'm a designer," thread. |

ROFL.... Ahaha, well honestly to tell you this is like my 5th or 6th site in CSS, recently Ive tried to design more, becuase well, my designing skills arent up to my coding skills and so Ive been trying to balance both. The design of this site is to be my portfolio, I choose bamboo and that jumping guy becuase I wanted to have more of an asian theme, so bamboo was a good choice and well the jumping guy sorta came along with it Also, Im not exactly sure what you mean by, "I made a website, now I'm a designer," thread.. heh, I believe Ill never be a designer, so well... |

I just meant that there's been a rash of threads with subjects like "This is my first website - please review" and it's a website promoting someone's web design services. It's akin to saying..."I did my first oil change, now I'm a mechanic!" I think you should ditch those two designs. The text is huge, fonts are ugly, and so on. You don't have to be so "brick to the face" literal to imply anything Asian. Have a look at a lot of the work over at http://www.csszengarden.com/ for inspiration - there's plenty of Asian themed designs over there. Here's some that have an Asian theme: http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=001/001.css http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=160/160.css http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=156/156.css http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=147/147.css http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=096/096.css http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=098/098.css http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=070/070.css http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=069/069.css http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=015/015.css |

Part to do with this thread: I was wondering how you intend to display this site. What I mean is you have quite a busy background with the silhouetted bamboo and I wondered how it might sit on a full page web browser, how you intened to blend in a background. Part not to do with this thread: Quote:

CSS Zen Garden is something I visit almost everyday! ZenElements, Im not exactly sure... Although, I think I might be able to pull it off. The main part of the site is not very hard to implement, its just a two column site, but the bamboo might be a but harder... Do you have any suggestions? Theros, You should really put a disclaimer with your post on what type of advice you need, there are a verylimited few who see it as a 'free license' to absolutely destroy your site even before you establish design elements on it!! They may actlike a pack of wolves and the reality is............they waffle about design and reality being they know jack shit. Check out pgo's site..................it does have holes in it, not validated and is rated as 'POOR' on google ranking............so keep at it and try and take what critisism you can and tell the few 'wolves' to fuck off as you do not merit their remarks. |

Greetings Theros The current design feels a bit too basic for me. The fonts are way too big, the lines are unsubtle and I'm not sure how the background would work. As pgo said, its a bit 'brick in the face'. The theme is fine. but get yourself some high quality imagery, use some nice fonts, and consider how your layout will scale effectively. A layout/feel similar to http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=147/147.css may work? And use lorum ipsum for the dummy text. |

About the site: Loose the background (make it white) instead of the plants. Loose the header all together and move the menu to the top. Make the menu text based with smaller font. Make the content text smaller as mentioned above, also for the recent work instead of 4 small samples just use one big one. Good luck. |
