critique on design so far

Am working on a site design for a client.. just want some feedback on one of the ideas so far!

The blue bit will be made in flash with some nice graphics and classy effects (no trendwhore effects) that link to the pages that the client wants the visitors to go to the most

Anyway, some comments please

EDIT: the site is for a book writer/publisher who writes language books for young teens who are learning english as a foreign language

looks good. My only criticism would be that to me the black doesnt sit well with the blue and red of the logo

you have a grey line running down the page between the 2 columns - it looks as if its been left there unintentionally. You could try mirroring the column grads at the bottom to define the columns if that what the grey line is for.
Are the logo colours set by client? If you ask me you'd be better off changing the blue in the logo to black rather than changing the black on the page nav and footer - they llok good and set off the page very well. The word ''minter" would then sit better with the bowler hat.
The only other thing is the alignment of the page on the right... cant tell whats supposed to line up with what? The footer looks wider than everything else and extend to the edges of the page yet the banner and nav dont.

thanks for the comments finbarr

yup, the grey line was to seperate the columns, will try mirroring the gradient at the bottom

i originally designed the logo just to have two colours, red and black, but the client wanted red white and blue (to represent the british flag). I'm meeting with him tomorrow so will discuss that then and try to change his mind (in case you're wondering about the bowler hat, the author's name is Bill Bowler)

Didn't notice the footer to be honest! Forgot about it while working on the rest of the idea, will make it so it aligns correctly

cheers again, all useful advice

I think you should try and persuade the client to go with the red and black - more iconic if you ask me.
I know it seemed like there was a lot of criticisms on my last post but theyre all minor things - the screenshot looks great

I really appreciate your design. It has decent looks. You can add there some flash design and images, logos that should be proposeful and should be most suitable and relevant to your site.

Oh, the design is rather nice too - though I agree, the blue in the logo seems to stand out in a funny way - black would probably work better - s'up to the client I gues though.
