1 New Site - 1 Strange Referrer

So, I launched a personal site the other day. I guess it's a "blog" but I call it a journal because I hate the term "blog". Anyway. I checked my stats - and had this site in my referrers...

w_ww._camgirlslive.co_m/layo_ut0/livecam_s2.jsp
(Beware the possibility of it being malicious...)

What. The. Fuck. I haven't clicked the link yet, as I'm at work, but I'm really curious to see what that's all about when I get home in an hour.

I've had the on dt.
Basically there is a programm that lets you send false refferers to loads of sites at once in the hope that the owner will check out your link. It also counts as a banklink in google if you dont password protect your stats.

So you've done them a big favour by posting the link here.

Altered then, so it's no longer a link.

oli: What do you mean by "It also counts as a banklink in google if you dont password protect your stats."?

Some people who use awstats etc, dont pword the directory its installed in so google finds it, sees their link and counts it as a backlink to their site boosting link poplularity and PR.

I see. Is it recommended to password protect your stats? In other words, are there drawbacks to getting a backlink from a site like that?

Yeah always pword your stats area.
You dont get the backlink - they do as its on your domain.

In some instances linking to a "bad/blacklisted" site can hurt your rankings/positions.

Mostly that's when you're involved in a "link-farm" type scheme or other dubious activity, I doubt that a single link in someone's referrers is enough to trigger google's penalty logic.

Tis unlikely but not unheard of, a single link to a "bad" site can, especially with Google, cause major problems.

A bit confused on the "password protected stats area" - the directory on the server, or the login to awstats etc?

Mine are - they're in the same directory as public_html (but not in public_html).

And to check them I must log into cPanel.

The only stats I know of that are indexed by Google are the third-party sites.
