re-direct on home page

what's the score here then? am i allowed to put a redirect on the home page to something like:

/home/

using meta refresh? now i realise that this is taking the control away from the user but if its an immediate refresh with a text link on the page for clients that don't support the refresh.

how much does it affect serps? all forums and blogs seem to redirect anyway.

opinions please.

thanks.

Use a meta 301 redirect in your .htaccess file, its whats used here on DT, search engine friendly method.
In .htaccess ::
Quote:
redirect 301 old.htm http://www.you.com/new.htm

For SEO purposes you'd be better of using a
PHP Code:
<? include("http://www.andrewspooner.com/index.html"); ?>
and saving as index.php as the spider will view the page being redirected to rather than the page with just the redirect on it.

I've tried using the Redirect 301 in .htaccess, worked fine, but then realized the next day, didnt work anymore, Im guessing my host has some sort configuration set about .htaccess files
