Importance of Meta description tag

Meta Tags are one of the most important thing in Promo link deleted by Mod Webnauts /Search Engine Marketing, In that "Meta description tag" is the most important one. The META Description Tag usually consists of 25 to 30 words or less using not more than 160 to 180 characters totally including spaces. The Meta description also shows up in many search engine results as a summary of your site. The META Description Tag is still an important factor in the overall equation of page development. Everything you do to that page will have an influence on something. i.e A description tag must explain the content of the page & what are they working with.

Title and h1 tag are most important for SEO.
Meta tags use to have their importance but are of not much of value now

Title is very important even nowadays. The description tag is also good for making web pages not to look like the same in search engines listings.

Title is the most important of the metatags. And get even more important (tested) if corelated with description/keywords.

Title is one of the biggest factor in SEO.... h1? I don't think it is important.. Less important or depends on how to use it..

Yeah, that's true but we cannot ignore h1 tag, as it represents the topic of content of the page, we should try to use our main keywords in H1 tag too which will also help in SEO and getting better ranking.

The description tags have to be unique for all the pages in order for google to index the site properly.

Is there a limit for meta keywords? Also is it better if they are all single words or single and combinations as well?

I think you can't pinpoint one thing as beigning important for SEO ...

... you must take everything on the page into consideration ...

that is to say look at the
- title
- headings (h1, h2, h3)
- links within the site (both out going and incoming)
- content ---> biggest factor i believe

your meta tags should then reflect on all of the above :-)

I would say no more than 13 keywords because if you put more google will spam it.

So much spouting of bollocks in a single thread. And with such an air of ill-informed authority too.

Don't stop there; what advice would you give to the thread starter then?

Nope. The problem is though that the more keywords you stuff into your "keywords"-tag, the less weight each one gets. So until about two years ago my strategy was to keep the number of keywords down to a minimum, i.e. 5 to 7 words in total. At some point, though, I stopped using the keywords-tag all together, because most major search engines (most notably Google) don't care about them. So, to cut a long story short, you might as well just omit the keywords-tag all together.
