Site maps

the old site map.
two questions,
do site maps help with search engines? because of the extra links within your "content", awhile a go I know it helped with google’s spiders
has anyone seen any good examples of site maps?

They can be usefull for accessibility reasons, as for search engines having a robots.txt file can help :

google will not follow links on a page unless it has a pr of 4 or more - so unless the page your sitemap is on has a pr of 4+ then it'll not make any difference anyway, apparently. i find it is more important to get google to rank your site rather than getting it to crawl it.

ps - there are some useful php tools out there which will build you a sitemap based on a directory structure, so you don't have to keep re-building one.

I may of explained it worng with the spider bit, i dont know how it works but know some of the tricks that do help. I know a few holiday hotel booking sites used to use it as it gave them a higher ranking.

used to use it. google changes its algorithms every 3 months or so and the rules change.

Where does that info come from?

Reason I ask is that my NPA site is PR3 afaik, but the entire site has been indexed.
I'm positioned first or second for my keywords (recently beaten out of pole position by a college course which I could overtake with just a little SEO tweaking).
